The humble dandelion became popular in our household last year. I can't wait for them to come back this year.

The kids like to build home made pizzas. We start with a wholemeal pitta bread each which is the base. Then the usual tomato and cheese. Then toppings of each individuals choice. This usual includes sage and rosemary from the garden. And when available, dandelion leaves.

@clueless1 ~ Oh wow! They sound delicious! And thank you, I have never, not ever, thought of putting rosemary nor dandelions on my pizzas:dbgrtmb:. And it's wonderful to know that there are some people who know about eating dandelions as well. I told a friend of mine that I needed to 'pick the lions on the grass before the lawnmower man arrived' because I was needing them for a salad and he asked me how much I'd had to drink and was I crazy?!

Dandelions have a lot of medicinal uses but you need to be careful - particularly if eating any of the root, as it's a strong diuretic. Known in ancient slang (in my younger days :old:) as 'piss-the-bed'. (I didn't spell it as 'wee' but the forum software censored me :snork:)

Leaves are good :dbgrtmb: in salads and cooked. Some of their leaves (lots of different varieties) can be quite bitter but then a light blanching gets rid of it. :)

The plants put a lot of nutrients into the soil but are a real nuisance in flower beds and lawns. excellent in wildplant areas but need to be kept under control.

Our name for the plant comes from the French 'dent de lion' (teeth of the lion) because of the shape of the leaves.

The official song of the University of Rochester is 'The Dandelion Yellow'.

You can make very attractive herb beds and the herbs aren't just green.
