I don't think they "mask" smells, Dendro, I think they do something else to the air but not quite sure what? Have one myself, actually, outdoors! :D

    Woo double paging!
I dont burn insense or use room fresheners near the rats, their respiritory systems are so delicate i'm reluctant to venture there.

Thanks for all the tips, and the plant suggestions, i'll have a play around and see what works! :D

As for the spider plant, we have one that sits in the room with the rats as it comes with the house and seems to thrive all on its lonesome, peculiar thing. Does not a thing for the smells!

I would agree about plug in air freshners - too much flammable, and heat is involed plus I don't like chemicals. However the small plug in ionisers are no risk - no liquid, no chemicals, no moving parts and no heating element.

Mine are left in and on - and work for me. I come down in the morning to a nice ozone fresh house - Even after cooking curry :D

    hi fran/whiley,
i'm just reading a book called 'The Pedant's Revolt' by Andrea Barham. its a compilation of things that most people think are fact, that have been proven otherwise.
It says that ionisers with 'ozone technology'(produce ozone) can actually be harmful.
"long term repeated exposure to high levels of ozone may lead to large reductions in lung function, inflammation of the lung lining and increased respiratory distress"

maybe not good if the rats have delicate respiratory systems!!!

back to the search for smelly house plants!

    It is!!!

the follow up is called 'The Pedant's Return'

"why things that you think are wrong are right"

they are brilliant! I didn't even know i was a pedant until i found the books. :D
always wondered what the saying " stop being pedantic" meant

I would agree that high levels of ozone are harmful, (albeit it protects us in the atmosphere) but I hardly think the amount from a small wall ioniser is going to harm.

    Useful book though.
