I'm growing himalayan blue poppies as well. I sow them outside one month ago but I'm not sure if they'll grow.
Is this one a poppy seedling?

I've got half a dozen or so seedlings popping through now. The top of the compost is green with a mossy coating because the3y have been damp for so long.

      Re Meconopsis

If you have a search on the net for Ian Christie you should find lots of advice re growing from seed BUT many Meconopsis can only be propogated by division as certain varieties' seed is sterile. I usually put seed from my Lingholm variety which will grow from seed in the fridge for a good period of time before sowing. Some success but I have found them pretty tricky post germination as they have a habit of dampening off...sigh. Agree they like plenty of moisture but free draining, ie the usual dilemma! and LOVE huge amounts of manure. I read somewhere that in their native land they grow like weeds of Yak manure heaps. Not having a Yak funnily enough I give mine at least six inches mulch of well rotted horse manure each Spring and they are blissfully happy. Yes I do live in Scotland, have acid soil and mine are in full sun, but then the sun doesn't shine up here, that said I have a fair suntan!

        Hi Joolz

If you sowed them on the 20th May you still have a long wait for some varieties , just keep an eye on it .

            .

I tried growing them from seed twice, had no problem with germination, or even growing them on, though some went to the big compost heap in the sky, as they either died or just would not develop properly!

But when they flowered, they were pale washed out coloured, waste of time and effort!

As my wife is Scots, I have seen them growing and flowering there, blooming marvellous!

Ps just try growing rhododendrons are this area, death to the poor wee things!

Boy do these things grow slow, they haven't moved at all. Just tiny seedling heads sprouting up above the compost.
All the other poppy's are growing well in my garden, am I too late perhaps?

Another thing , is it legal to grow poppy's? My garden is full of them.

its legal to grow them, its legal to cut n dry for display but it is illegal to take 10 dried heads of papavar somniferum ,grind finely, bring to boil in 2 cups of water with a squirt of lemon juice, remove from heat and steep for 10 mins stirring occasionally, then strainging off the pulp and downing in one :) i guess, would prob be completley out of the question:loll: x

Ha Ha, Ok , thank you for the detailed info.
I did google it and found many ways to extract opium from the seed pod thingy, it is opium isnt it?
I suppose its the same as those funny mushrooms, its OK to grow them , pick them but not OK to make a cup of tea with them.
