For May 2018 it will be Key West again. and then sometime in the Summer is Nova Scotia. Thinking about a short weekend away, in the winter, depends on the weather, Berkeley Springs, WV. for spa and mineral baths. Like 4 days.

Heading for Lincolnshire at the weekend for five days. Will be staying about four miles from Lincoln. Never been in that neck of the woods before and really looking forward to it. Anyone got any suggestions about things to do? Don't have a clue!

@Irmemac its all very rural around there. If you were an hour and a bit further south you could have called in for a coffee.

Lincoln itself has the castle, the cathedral and a museum. Nearby RAF Scampton is home to the red arrows.

Otherwise nothing jumps out at me. My wife and I are going in December for the Xmas market. It's probably the most well known thing about Lincoln.

If you travel a bit you can go to the Humber Bridge. If you were that way, the Deep at Hull is very good. That might be a bit out of your way though.

There are one or two market towns: Louth, Gainsborough, Boston. The beaches up that way are quite nice too.

Sorry. It's just that be too far away for me to be familiar with. Hopefully somebody else will be able to fill in the gaps.

Thank you Jack, I really appreciate your advice. Rural sounds lovely, so that's a great start. A potter round some pretty little market towns, walks in the wood and a spot of culture would fit the bill very nicely....

... and  possibly (shh, don't tell Mr Mac) a trip to a garden centre or two while there...!!

BTW, when I was in Edinburgh, I stayed in Murryfield hotel for my first night, loved it. then moved to the Holiday Inn (as part of my travel group) did not love it as much. If I go back to that area, it will be Murryfield again. Later, I will get back to you of all the other inns we stayed at on our travels.

I once stayed for 2 nights in the George - Intercontinental, in Edinburgh. It was very posh but a bit cold and clinical. it didn't have that welcoming feel about. Any time you asked the reception staff for advice they directed you to the concierge desk. The concierge I must say was very good. I love Edinburgh. A few years back I took the wife and we even took the dog. I would love to live closer.

found that quite the opposite. it was warm, friendly, some historic quality which I loved. and quiet. thought that would be an issue as its attached to a restaurant but was just fine. the food is good there also. nice bar for relaxing and safe for a single person. they helped me a lot with getting around. and making sure I had the correct change for the bus. I guess the guy at the desk is the concierge, he was always in a certain area, but he checked me in also.

We tend to consider our travels not so much as holidays but as 'travel'. These are usually for us to see the history, culture, way of life and scenery of the places we go to. Most of the time, when we get home, we need a rest!!! :heehee:

We've just returned from an historical and ancient tour of many places. The Holy Land (Jerusalem, Galilee, Golan Heights - traffic was heavy everywhere but they have a very good app to help them navigate the delays), Sicily, Rhodes, Cyprus, Amalfi Coast, Malta etc.

Next two holidays already booked (one a bit of a fluke :noidea:). The next one is travelling across Rajastan to see a lot of World Heritage sites and palaces as well as mixing with the people - and enjoying the local food.

The fluke happened on Friday. I received an email, from a holiday company we have used before, with a Black Friday offer. It was for a river cruise on the Elbe. They were offering us £100 per person off as we were previous customers (a number of companies do similar) and doubling the discount as it was Black Friday. That didn't seem a big enough incentive for us to bother but I phoned them to see whether they could make it worth our while. I caught them near to closing time and they hadn't quite hit their target. So, after quite bit of haggling, I got an extra £1,000 off. :hate-shocked: An offer I couldn't refuse :snorky:

A friend and I once spent a long weekend in Rome. The tour of the ancient city was excellent. That's my kind of holiday. There were other tours available but we just stuck with this one.

I once looked at a weeks guided tour of ancient Greece. It was way out of our price range.

Earlier this year my wife went to Krakow. Whilst there she went to Auchwitz and also down the salt mines. There are something like 200 steps down into the salt mines. :phew: she did it. Bless her.

There's a holiday company that does mainly 'cultural' tours. We've been with them a number of times and they're very good and a reasonable price. I see that they're doing 8 days to Malta - flights, B&B in 4 star hotel and some excursions for about £600. There are extras you can have e.g. half board and extra excursions etc. but they're a good price.

They tend to cut down on paperwork. If you reserve a holiday you only get seven days to make a decision otherwise you're automatically booked!

I'm quite happy to do that sort of thing as long as there's a purpose.
