Horse meat.

      We are what we are....meat eaters:snork: We distance ourselves as far as we can from the Slaughter Houses etc and only see the end result, carefully packaged and clean. If we were to see how food is really produced it would put us off.........for a while. But Nature evolved the whole food chain, the survival of the fittest, and we have evolved the farming of animals for food and articles of use, all part of the system..

        Nature is a very unforgiving force. All things that want to eat meat, must go for the Jugular.. that's how you kill prey

        (we dont live like that of course)..

        I have killed and ate a few insects though.. does this count? Ants for one.. actually taste good with chips. Honestly!

              What is anoying me at the moment is all the politicians and spokespersons stating it is a LABLING PROBLEM
              It is NOT,
              I do eat horse meat, The problem is not knowing the history of the meat
              as in was the horse reared for meat, or a working horse that has received medical care The drugs involved are the REAL problem

              It would be nice to know that you are eating BEEF and not a mix
              It would be nice to know that you are eating HORSE

              I mistakenly watched a programme on sausage production,and I never ate another sausage for about two years until I forgot what I had seen and what went into them

              I have eaten and enjoyed quite a few animals dog and exotics, Antelope, and lions Kidneys, etc

              I have even killed two animals, a rabbit and a sheep (A needs must survival course)

              My favourite meat is Very Rare Aberdeen Angus beef or Antelope steak

              This latest news has almost made me a veggie

              Well having ridden horses on and off over the years since the age of three and owning one there is no way that i could ever eat horse in the same way that i could never eat cat,dog,rabbit, guneia pig,budgerigar etc,all of which i have kept as pets throughout my life:biggrin:

              I have eaten ostrich and kangaroo when Mr T sold them in the past before they pulled them off the shelves and although they tasted ok,there is comaprrison to a nice leg of lamb:snork:

              Someone in our village has a horse skin on the floor in their hall and i can't even bring myself to tread on it and have to step over it instead:snork:

              There is no way could i ever not eat meat as i am not a great veggie lover even though we grow a lot of our own but at least we don't have to survive on all that chemical sprayed stuff that the farmers grow each year and the supermarkets are happy for people to buy and i don't think washing the fruit and veg will get rid of the chemical residues as the veggie plants will have already taken in some of the chemicals through their foliage when they are growing in the fields:eeew:

                  Is it the same in the EU as in the US, that the restrictions imposed after BSE only cover foodstuffs for cows, pigs, sheep, etc. and not horses that aren't intended to go into the food chain?

                  Surely, there are two issues with this debate

                  1 - As has already been pointed out - although there's nothing wrong with eating horsemeat, it isn't subject to anything like the strict regulation that beef is and thus the meat used in the affected products could be, in other siuations, be classed as unfit for human consumption.

                  2 - Labelling. If a product is labelled as containing "100% beef" that's all it should contain. Now, I'm prepared to accept that the makers of affected products may have been misled or let down by someone earlier in their supply chain, but at the same time I would have thought it encumbent upon them to make regular checks on their supplier's suppliers, and all their ingredients, rather than taking it on trust.

                  Whatever the outcome, with everyone apparently now suing everyone else, the only ones to benefit from this debacle are going to be the lawyers.

                      I personally would have no problem (morally or ethically) with killing and butchering my own food. I don't do it because its easier to get it from the butcher's shop.

                      There's also the point that I don't like to see meat wasted. It was once an animal, and to take its life just so most of its body can go to landfill is just far too sad for me. I once tried to prepare a pheasant that the next door farmer gave me. I lost half of it by the time I'd fumbled my way through a very botched attempt at butchery, and I thought this bird was killed for me to eat, and half of it is wasted. I felt really guilty. If the butcher does it, he's going to get it right, and much less goes to waste.
