I notice that the Local Butcher avoids saying, as he used to, "would you like your meat cut as a Saddle, Sir?":snork:

Mrs Scrungee has just told me (Channel 4 a few mins ago) that beef extract has been discovered in Asda (suitable for vegetarians) bolognaise sauce.

What exactly caused the first test to be carried out?

The cynic in me (which seems to get bigger by the day) is thinking that much of this has been engineered by the food industry so that we don't complain when the price of these meat products suddenly rise in price; indeed, the potential of price rises was being discussed on the BBC only a couple of days ago.

It appears that the Supplier to Morrisons queried the kind of meat it was putting in it products that it was selling to them. There's all sorts of firms on the continent being investigated as fraudulent meat trading, some where the owners have already been prosecuted, and been jailed, for the offence. How come the authorities allowed these firms to keep trading and the owners to come out of jail and start again???:dunno: :snork:

To be honest, I can't see how meat prices could rise as a result of this. Consumer confidence has taken a massive hit.

Initially, the sceptic in me wondered if British farmers might have had something to do with it, as it was initially just french beef that was the problem, so I wondered if that would make more people choose British, but then when we find out that much of the horse meat originated here before going to france, now I don't know what to think.

I wonder if lots of people are feeling the same as me, I no longer want to eat anything made of mince or low quality (cheap) meat, so I'll only choose whole joints or chicken in the future, i.e. products that can't be messed about with. If we all do this I suppose it will push up prices.

For the last few years I have wondered what had happened to certain cheaper cuts and offal as it doesn't get sold in the supermarkets, but presumed it would be used as filler in pies and burgers.
But I still dont know now for instance neck of lamb, heart liver kidneys I can buy these at my butchers but not at the local ripoffweselleverythingstore.
As a young un my mother with modest means would feed us without the need of processed food or a freezer.

I am afraid I am an offal eater

For some reason only the poor offal is available ie:- blanket tripe
The quality Tripe Honeycomb has been off sale for about five years

You can not find cow heel (calves foot) anywhere

My favourite Pork chop with kidney no chance
You buy the Pork chop then have to buy seperate Kidney from Brazil ?

Hey Donkey get the lady a can of oil
Why does he call you Donkey

HE HAW HE HAW HE ALWAYS CALLS ME DONKEY

I don't think that prices will rise for all types of meat, but I have a suspicion that the prices of things like burgers and ready meals will rise if only under the excuse that they are using 'assured higher quality meat supplies' (or some such sales speak).

Apparently, the banning of Desinewed meat may have had a bearing on the situation we are currently in - if this recovered meat/mince was deemed fit for use for a decade and more, we perhaps have to ask why it was suddenly banned? And if it was banned purely because of a categorisation issue (as the linked article seems to suggest), then surely that situation needs to be addressed - fast. I get the feeling that some of this is akin to the EU rules such as dictating that only straight bananas can be sold?
