I am a huge fan of mulching with wood chip as my S in L is a tree surgeon and always has plenty so I get tractor bucket full dropped off whenever I want.. They are 2yr old chips so I can replace on a regular basis and I do as free.. ;):)

@Marley Farley , how long does it take for the woodchips to rot down? Do you find them to be good for improving the soil? :)

@Tetters yes I find they improve my soil anyway as it it beautiful black loam, but no water retention so the wood chips do improve it as a bit more organic matter.. Because the chips are already 2yrs old they rot down over about another 2yrs, but I mulch with some fresh every year now, but I dont’ dig The last years in everywhere as it would make my soil to acidic.. I just add every year...

Mmm - I think they might suit me better here as pathways through some of the wilder parts of the site... it would be the acidity I`d worry about, but they would make a good surface to walk on I think

As yet have not had an acidity problem so far with my soil @Tetters but I do keep an eye out for that.. Great on paths too..

Surely acidity is the last of your worries, so much easier to correct than the other way round.

Well that`s true Pete, but if I weigh up the fact that the peat plus I use doesn`t upset the PH and it feeds and improves the soil too (which is needed) my thinking is I would be better off sticking with plan A. It`s easy enough for me to get hold of wood chips, but maybe they would do the pathways better.

Oh dear, I've just been reading forecasts that this heatwave weather is going to last all through August and is likely to break all sorts of records.

Forget any forecasts. "They" know nowt about future weather. Weather changes so quickly but whatever will be will be. :)

Five or six weeks now with no rain ,it’s now the survival of the fittest.
Just concentrating watering the best plants.........I’m afraid there will be deaths.
It’s the bedding that’s suffering most.......but the Cannas are loving it.

Plantsmen have been warning us for some time ,but they have been wrong.....till now.
