With the wet summer we've had, in common with other gardeners, my well established hosta leaves are totally shredded by noctural visitors - I guess snails or slugs. Can I cut the plants back early or will this affect next year's growth?

I shouldn't think it would hurt next years performance overly but do give them a feed afterwards. If you're really concerned then just chop off the worst offenders.

If it helps, mine are the same and i've cut them down already

IMG_20160614_211019166.jpg I grow mine in pots for that very reason, they are herbaceous perennials so all the top growth will come away soon, if they are really unsightly I don`t see any reason why not.

Snails and slugs are bad but try "bambies"! There are 2 young buck deer about atm and they have eaten 3 what were very nice clumps of Hostas almost to the ground...little sh1ts! The Hostas had this happen to them about 4 years ago and it didn't affect their growth the following year. I don't mind deer using my garden as a supermarket on the winter when food is scare but during the summer is a bit much. has anybody got a gun?...only kidding:)
