I have joined up to several forums over the years for different subjects. My passion has always been history. I would love to have been involved with history for a living. A few years back I was travelling to Scotland a lot and started reading up on Scottish history. I joined a Jacobite history forum and started off reasonably well. I found after a time that all the members I came into contact with were all partisan Scots and had no interest in a balanced discussion. I gave up trying in the end.

When I stopped travelling to Scotland I started reading up on the War of Roses. I joined another forum. A more general one. This forum was very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately I found two issues, a) nobody was particularly interested in what I was interested in and b) all other discussions went way over my head. There was no way I was ever going to be able to join in.

When I started to revamp my garden earlier this year I looked for a gardening forum. The one I signed up to was gardenersworld.com I think. Something like that. It was an international site which wasn't really what I wanted. I received a few greetings and was told that I need to state where I live in order to receive the right advice. Fair enough. I never heard anything after that.

Next I specifically searched for a UK based forum and here I am. I have been here 2 weeks and I feel right at home. Everybody is so friendly. I do have one complaint though. My smiley faces keeping disappearing. :-(

@Jack Sparrow - are you clicking the smileys from the menu, or are you putting them in as text?

It will only work for some, as they are not 'standard' if you follow my drift - the smile consisting of a colon : and a close bracket ) will give the desired :)

For the others, you would have to know the short code, which is entered with a colon at each end - so snorky with a colon in front and after gives :snorky: and sign0016 with a colon in front and after gives :sign0016:

Maybe it is time that the short codes are revised, as some of them are a bit lengthy or obscure, and more people now will type them in as they are using tablets etc - what do you think, would it be worth reviewing them?

For you @Jack Sparrow. :) I live just a few miles from Culloden and have been reading/studying Scottish history for many years preferring the medieval era.

OK - if it is going to help, then we can revise them - I have some time off work week after next, so will start a thread with suggested alterations and seeking opinions from everyone; I'd be grateful for your opinion on that thread when it comes @Jack Sparrow :dbgrtmb:

image.jpeg @Sheal It was rough the day we went there. Needless to say we didn't stay out there long. Indoors was great. It was the kind of place you could spend a fortnight. While I was there I bought a cd of the historic readings. I particularly liked the fictional discussion the night the Prince and generals decided to turn back. I used that in my presentations. I equally liked he Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. One morning just isn't enough.
