Blimey, it is a small world - I lived just outside Sanquhar for a while (between Sanquhar and Mennock) and even went to Sanquhar Academy for a short time.

I've not lived in Scotland for 15 years now - I moved down to London, and now live just on the south-western fringes (I am in Surrey, not London, but I am still within the M25).

What part of Dumfries are you in?

Fairly decent soil up there too, as long as it drains freely.

Hells bells, this is spooky! Just before leaving Dumfries, I lived in Criffel Road - the wee cul-de-sac bit that runs down to the roundabout; I lived in Cresswell before that, and still have family in Locharbriggs.

Somewhat embarrassingly, I was involved in the rhinos being returned to the spot that used to be a bus shelter near the bypass end of Lincluden; you might not remember it, but Priory Avenue used to continue straight ahead to a junction with the Glasgow Road before the roundabout was built. There used to be a bus shelter, and at some point a local artist and school kids made the rhinos and put them on top of the bus shelter.

When the roundabout was being built, and the road moved, the bus shelter was removed and with it the rhinos - - there was an uproar from the locals (to be honest, I couldn't have given two hoots) and there was a whole load of legal squabbles to get them back and get them onto some sort of plinth.

For those that don't know the area, and think I am utterly bonkers, here is a StreetView link

Its nice and quiet down the back though - I take it you are near the Abbey?

Anyway, I'll stop prattling on now.......... :snork:

You'll love this forum by the way - its addictive (very!) but its tremendously friendly, and you will get everything from banter to great advice and even on to cuttings and seeds :blue thumb:

Nice to have you aboard. :)

There was a pub there, yes - The Babbington; it wasn't the most 'salubrious' of places, but it generally had a good crowd to be fair.

Came home from there with a bit of a wobble on a few times, I must admit.

Loads of history like that stored in my old memory box - if you ever need to know any of it, feel free to send a PM :)

You are really quite well served in Dumfries for garden centres and nurseries too - - don't know if its still there, but there used to be a really good wee nursery down Maxwelltown Station Road; Heathhall Garden Centre was always pretty good, as was the nurseries at the Crichton (but I suspect that those ones have gone now, as that is all university land?)

Des Plants had a nursery too (shop on the Whitesands by the market, and nursery somewhere around Glencaple from memory); bear in mind that its been at least 15 years, so it could all be covered in blocks of flats by now :snork:

PS - if you need any TV aerial or satellite work done, you won't go far wrong with T N McKay in English Street :blue thumb:

          Hi Nathan
I learned of the site by word of mouth.
Hope this helps - I am a bit of a Luddite and would probably not have stumbled upon you with a web search!
