Sadly one can no longer read my earliest experience of matters botanical as the site where the story was stored has disappeared. Boo hoo.
I will only go as far as to say that I am the only person ever to get into gardening via travel sickness though!

My Great grandfather was my first insperation, he had a small alotment and he used to let me hold the string while he tied his tomatoe plants up. [IMG]
My grand father had a greenhouse with a grape vine in, if we were good he used to pick a small bunch as a treat. :D
As times were hard my dad started to grow veg in the back garden, treat there was strawberries. :D ;)
My first thing i did on my own was the front garden at home, it was just lawn so i did a flower bed around and planted my first daffs and tulips! [IMG]

I never really bothered much with gardening in my younger years (too busy discoing etc.) but, once I got my own home.......well, I wanted the garden to look nice and be a place to sit out in, have barbeques etc., so I started planting things to make it nicer, and never looked back.

I've been through all sorts of phases, with architectural type plants, pond-plantings, shade gardens etc. but I think I like a cottagy style now, with mixed flowery shrubs, perennials and hardy annuals thrown in.

I've recently moved to a fab, established (neglected a bit) garden with a greenhouse and I am in my element experimenting with growing veggies and more exotic stuff in the aforementioned greenhouse, and rearranging the borders to suit me.

    I just love it!

i got into gardening at quite an early age as my mum and dad have a reasonable sized garden and my dad has been a gardener all his life so basically from about the age of 4 or 5 I was outside with my dad helping him out.
When I moved out I moved into a flat with my partner so no garden but now we have taken on a allotment so we can grow our own veg and show our daughter where fruit and veg comes from.

Started back in the 1980s. I lived in West Hampstead, my landlady - old lady from Czechoslovakia (as it then was) said to me one day, "If you're going to sit in this garden, you might as well make yourself useful - go and get the secateurs and dead-head the roses". And...that's how it all started. Some people I've mentioned this too have thought she had a bi of a cheek, but I think she did me a great favour..while I lived there I took more and more responsibility for her garden (as she was getting old and frail anyway). Then I went to live in Leeds, where I just had window-boxes and house plants. When I first came back to London I had a small garden in containers outside the house in Belsize Park. I had become very interested in organic gardening by then, and I grow mainly veg and herbs, and I have some fruit trees in pots. I also did a voluntary job as a gardener for the William Morris Society.
Some of you may have read on another thread the saga of the compost bin which was provided by the Council and to which the landlady objected, and the harassment I was subjected to because I was placing "unsightly objects" (i.e. plants) on the concrete - suffice it to say that I have been rehoused by Camden Council, and finally have MY OWN CONTAINER GARDEN - complete with Compost Bin! -on the terrace outside my ground-floor flat.

I grew up in Devon and my mum has always loved fresh , home-grown food. When I moved to London for my university course I started making the most of the tiny area jokingly referred to as a garden. I wanted to create an oasis in the "smoke" and also I wanted to start growing my own food because I am concerned about production methods and those infamous "food miles". My recently deceased granddad always grew his own runner beans so I am doing my own this year for the first time in his memory. He will probably be looking down on me telling me I'm doing it all wrong. :)

I just cannot wait to move out of London when my course finishes so I can start playing in the mud again. My garden is planned - I just need the space!

It has been really interesting finding out how everyone got into gardening but we all know why we keep doing it.

Nice one craig, cities are great but I too missed the green.

My first fuschia/flower bed at university, defiled by builders wash off. Got started on fuschias because they were easy to take cuttings of and thus FREE! Smashed a wedge off the path and filled it with compost and made myself a piece of home in a grotty part of portsmouth...to sit on the step and have coffee...
