How do I improve the workability of clay soil?

    I use either spare tonne bags laid over the top of the compost bags then weighted down with bricks,which keeps too much rain out (worms don't like the compost too wet) or black plastic if I have some old stuff lying about.I have also used one of those green boot liners that I was using in the back of my car to keep the inside clean but it had got pretty tatty so have used it to cover one of the bags:snorky:

    The only reason those spuds look so weed free is because I earthed them up well and when the soil is dry have been walking up and down the rows and hoeing the weeds that didn't come loose when I earthed up the spuds.You have to Earth them up to keep the sunlight from the tubers that grow near the surface,because if they grow green they can end up poisonous(you would have to eat lots of them to become ill) but no one really likes to eat green spuds for dinner:biggrin:
