Good picture Woo. :dbgrtmb: Monochrome has given it that 'edge' which would have been lost with colour. :)

I have a cheap digital camera but find that I can vastly improve the end result by editing in photobucket, i.e. this process really compensates for the initial limitations. I tend to like a lot of colour so use the "saturation" facility a lot!

Everyone has their own taste Rosebay. :) I never alter a picture for any reason, I prefer to see them in there natural state and if I'm not happy with the quality it gets deleted. What would we do without digital cameras? When you think of how many we delete now and how much a roll of film cost us many years ago, you didn't dare waste a shot!

What is it about graveyards that attract me so much?

Well framed/composed photo. If you are anything like myself, then the reason I get
drawn to graveyards (or at least did so in my teens) is that they serve as a reminder of
our mortality and get us thinking about life's big questions.

Did you ever see the film "Harold & Maude" (featuring 2 people with this fascination).
It's cult viewing and the humour may be too dark for most people's tastes.

Not seen "Harold & Maude" but as I,m into researching our family history the attraction may be there. Plus, my love of photos.

@capney the first thing I noticed in your graveyard picture was the sloping church. The first thing I look for in photo's particularly my own is a level horizon, unfortunately it's something that bugs me. Not a criticism but a question......it's difficult when portraying something close (like your gravestone) whether the background horizon, or in this case the church should be the item levelled, what's your opinion please? :)

It's due to a quirk in standard camera lenses, Sheal, where straight lines can appear bent when a shot is taken at a angle.

                Or...................

It's called perspective distortion. It is and can be caused by lens design and the lack of having your 'film plane' parallel to the subject. The instant you have to tilt your camera to get a tall building into the picture, you are introducing perspective distortion. The only way to really fix it is to keep the camera level, even if it means losing some of the building in the image. Even then, wide and extra wide angle lens can still exhibit the distortion, sometimes even bending parallel buildings in toward one another (almost a form of barrel distortion and/or pincushion distortion).

The only other way I know to fix it is to use a PC lens (perspective correcting). This lens type allows you to tilt your camera to fit the building in the image, and then tilt the lens in order to try and straighten up vertical lines within the frame. But the best way to deal with it is to hold the 'film plane' (think of the back of the camera as the plane if it isn't indicated on the body) level in regards to the horizon and along the vertical axis. Then you will see what distortion is purely being caused by the lens.

That's an interesting reply Armandii, thank you. I've just gone back to study Capney's picture again. What's also interesting is that if the church wasn't in the background I'd be inclined to think nothing of it, even with the base of the trees in shot. They are a natural form and I would accept them if they leaned but something man made is different, I suppose because it's built upright (originally anyway) the eye expects to see it level.

Sheal, it never occurred to me that it was sloping. It was not the thing I focussed on at all.
                        For me it was
                        1) the flowers
                        2) the head stone, which I tried to read

I get a bit paranoid about sea horizons though...:heehee:

Lets have a chat about this picture. Monochrome flowers and of course a church. It,s a shame the crispness of the picture has been removed by the photobucket.
