Have just been looking to purchase an Echinacea 'Harvest Moon' and Hemerocallis 'Cherry Cheeks' neither of which are particularly unusual but the prices quoted by Mail Order nurseries vary from £4.99 + 50p to close on £10 per 2 litre pot. These prices from 'reputable' nurseries and not Xmas specials.

Plant prices are now raising to rediculous levels and becoming untenable. I guess that the lucky gardeners re those living near to the appropriate nurseries or who have the time and patience to grow from seed (not a reliable method to stock a garden in my experience).

i buy loads off ebay .... trick is to find a supplier who has most of what you are after, thus saving on shipping

as an idea, a few months ago, I bought 2 chamaerops humilis palms .... my garden centre wanted £135 each for the size I was after

I paid £80 for both (including next day delivery) from cornwall directly from a breeder/grower .... and they were larger than what my garden centre had

i do the same with hostas, ferns, huechera, etc ..... bargains on ebay

Barnaby - the going rate for perennials in the GCs around here is £6.49. We're lucky to have a small nursery 10miles away where the prices range from £2.49 to £4.99, and is buying in from a different supplier so has a far more interesting range.
At a guess, I would say that 60% of my stuff is now seed grown, but that figure is going up by the day.
