All the above postings gave me a good laugh! My cucumbers must be the ridge type too as they're just the right size for two or three people in a salad. What my hubbie discovered last week whilst having a mooch under the leaves was that cucumbers are PRICKLY!!!! Now he won't go near them! So why are cucumbers prickly ... they're not prickly in the shops!?! Is it a skilled job to perhaps 'rub off' the prickles before selling them on??

Winnie; all the leaves are quite prickly too! Prickliness depends on the variety, it seems these smaller one like Marketmore have sharper prickles than the bigger traditional ones like Telegraph.

Well, you learn something new every day .... thanks John, I didn't know that. Mind you I've no idea whatsoever as to the variety we're growing - bought them in a french supermarket ... six plants for 3,50euros ... and they're growing in the greenhouse at a rapid rate.

These guys are in my front room window, I'm not brave enough to grow them outside.

You are all miles in front of me-mine are tiny-I must have done something wrong, they are nowhere near fruiting yet.
