I would also like to add that surely it would be better to create a useful list of links like this based on OUR experiences that serve us well, rather than the usual links that have been compiled from a commercial point of view and are more frustrating than useful!

I find this amusing but rather naive.

Don't think people really realise what is involved in running a interactive website like this. Another forum I belong to, that generally has about 500-1000 people online at any one time, recently underwent a major upgrade to an ISP with more memory and more and better "bells and whistles".

The Webmaster thought it would take him about seven days to make the change - it ended up taking him two months and we're still finding bugs and gremlins that he's having to sort.

    Just a cautionary tale!!!

However, there's no rule stopping people setting up new sites and all power to them, I say. That's what the internet's all about and diversity is the spice of life. If you think you have what it takes you go for it, mate, and the very best of luck!

I bin thinking about what has been discussed, and in particular the area of useful links. I would agree that a web site totally devoted to providing useful gardening links that are also locality specific would be a good idea - as long as the web site owner was prepared to keep it up to date, and develop a way for users rate things. Things change - and there is some really sharp practice out there - even in gardening :D .

I'm not sure that setting up the same kind of thing on GC is appropriate or would add value - even without the work Nathan would have to do on the site. Our membership goes right across the UK and beyond - and a big part of the value of this site is - a member ask a question on a huge range of topics, and very quickly someone, somewhere knows or knows how to find the answer - or based on experience can hazard a guestimate. The search facility can bring up previous answers on the same topic/question. In addition members recommendations can be useful.

When I started to think of links, topics etc - the list suddenly became huge, Lady Gardener wants some inexpensive gardening tools, another member wants an inexpensive source of top soil, turf, paving, another member a gardener, another a particular tree.........

I think I prefer things as they are on balance - just my two pennyworth. :D

Fran - I tend to agree about keeping GC as it is - but I think something with the links people are mentioning would have value - so perhaps, "GardeningSite" - that's something you could usefully provide that's in addition to the fantastic advice-site that this is? Then nobody's treading on anyoine else's toes?? :D

[IMG] Yes, I agree with Fran and Nixonf, so best of luck 'Gardeningsite' and when you have set up your own site, I am sure a mention on GC would be allowed and we can all have a browse!

I was thinking of starting a 'regionalised' section for garden centres in that area etc.

    What are your thoughts ???

It sounds like a lot of work for you, Nathan! And maybe it's re-inventing the wheel? It could be really useful for s/o like me who's just moved into an area - but I know I've just googled stuff and found out most of what I want - maybe others have different experiences? BTW - I love this site!! :D

    nixon,

thanks for the feedback ;) .

The idea of having a 'regionalised' section is mainly so you name a garden centre, and give it a rating, Value for money, ease of access, easy to find, quality of stock etc etc.

This way, we can build a portfolio of garden centres, and know where to go/where to avoid.

    Nathan.

Also, hopefully it won't be me making the list, it will be people from their local area (I couldn't/wouldn't go to Scotland to rate a garden centre ;) for example) .

Thanks Lisa!! Mystery solved - I'd thought for a while it might be lots of love, or lots of luck, but nothing quite fitted! TA! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

It seems everyone spends too much time on the computer andnot enough on the garden (me included) not that therre is anything one can do when it is teeming with rain and freezing cold. Yesterday I even went out to purchase some extra heerbaceous plants now I need to look at where to put them!

New sites are always welcome but my problems relate to soil and despite all the wonderful ways to enrich my 'sand' the water still runs through. Planting different species is the only way that I can find out what will grow and that becomes quite expensive as well as resulting in filling the garden with a limited number of plants.

Good luck with your site - I fear that having read dozens of books and been gardening for far too long I may have to continue with my own 'path to glory'.............................

the point is, chobart - that we're all learning from each other! As you pointed out, the weather isn't great for being oi#ut in the garden, so we're all doing useful things, like being in the greenhouse, and complaining to each other - and asking questions!! It's all good stuff!
