    I've just realised there was a question in what you posted, chobart!! Sorry! The only thing you can do with a very sandy soil is add other stuff so its proprtions of everything are more useful for gardening in! In other words, lots of organic matter, and bringing in top soil. If I were you, I'd do it a bit at a time, and assess how well or not it's working - that way you'd manage the expense more economically, and be more likely to see an improvement. I've got the other end of the scale - heavy clay, that I'm having to improve. Can I have some of your sand?? :D :D :D

    Nixon - I once had a flat in Falkirk which backed onto the railway line - nice place......
    You are welcome to the Berkshire sand - its great for golf courses and rhodedendrons and of course the weeds have a ball. Have just found a new supplier of compost so still moving on.
    To the Lady Gardener - we see Peter Alliss occasionally but one of your countrymen (Sam Torrance) is a member up here and lives on Wentworth - both courses are wonderful nearly as good as Western Gailes, etc.

    My house backs on to it too! Redding - new-build - loads of it around!
