Sheal I have never noticed this.
Does it work on ALL Escallonia.
Is your beautiful long hedge maybe Escallonia CF Ball?
This does get quoted as having aromatic leaves.
I shall have to go around and test it on every Escallonia I can find!

The Timber Press Encyclopedia of Flowering Shrubs

I thought the glossy leaves a good match.
      Am I missing something?

      http://www.aphotoflora.com/images/escalloniaceae/escallonia_macrantha_leaves_29-08-04.jpg

Time will tell...if right it should start flowering soon.
If not it will be back to the drawing board!

I'm not sure whether it's the same with all Escallonia @Silver surfer. The hedge was in my previous garden and was there when I moved in so I can't help with the identification. However I do still have pictures.....

Sorry, this picture isn't much help the hedge had been newly trimmed.

When I trimmed the hedge the sappy leaves would stick to everything but the perfume from them was quite strong with the citrus aroma. If you compare the leaves with those in Martin's first picture (post #5) the veins seem to be laid out differently. However the way the new stems grow out from Martin's shrub suggest Escallonia to me. :)

The second one is a Spiraea, the fourth possibly Deutzia scabra. The photo above is most certainly an Escallonia...

All the Deutzia I`ve propagated had smooth edges on the leaves, but this plant appears to have serrated edges  Spiraea .. !!:doh:

Martin...the red flowers with 5 x yellow bits (stamens)that you have just posted are definitely
                100 % Escallonia sp.
Whether the leaves smell citrusy you haven't said!

It now gets very very messy as you have posted several pics.
I don't know how to number /name them.
It much easier if you just post 3 plants per thread.
                Or number your pics.
We are all going to get in a terrible muddle which plant/pics we are talking about.

Start a new thread. Might be safer.
Not a problem to post one plant at a time.
When happy start another thread etc etc.
Don't keep adding to an existing thread.
People haven't the time to read all the posts.

Interesting @martin-f ! :) Then @Silver surfer could be right in her suspicions that the perfume only comes from a specific type of Escallonia.

Photo's of that particular plant's flowers will prove the point either way.
