Doing the root pruning, as westwales says, is a good way of controlling it and it will slow down the growth somewhat.

If you don't want to keep a trench around it you can just line the edges of a trench with plastic sheeting and leave an inch or two above ground level. Backfill the trench and lightly cover the bit you've left above ground. Every couple of years just uncover the plastic that's above ground and slide your spade down so that it may cut off any roots that may be trying to penetrate the plastic.

You may find that yours originated from a dropped twig; they snap off easily and birds do carry them for nesting.

Keep looking - mine was a stray and I never found out where it came from but I do know that two of my neighbours have offshoots from mine. Offspring of mine are also in London, Northampton, Leicester and Cardiff but you'll be pleased to know they were taken in pots, didn't get there through spreading roots.

Just noticed your address, I wonder if yours came from Wales?

Ha Ha a welsh sumach tree, I'll get my my mum to talk to it. I guess it could happen wont be doing anything with the plant untill the fence is in as the posts have to be cemented in.Pointless planting anything on the side as a lot will be dug up to put fence in.

The beautiful plant has now been hacked down to to about an inch off the floor by the idiot neighbour next door. I'm angry because he has been extremely nasty in the last few weeks. He didnt want a hedge up on the boundary between us.He kept cutting it so it stopped growing so we took them out and was measuring up the front to put small fence up.He threatened my hun two saturdays on the trot so we got the police involved. When the fence went up he went to the back and hacked two of his large trees near the boundary? and then carried on using electric saw to hack various plants on our side. This plant being one of them I plan to get another from somewere if poss.We are in the process of putting up a 6 foot fence in the back. All because he didnt want a boundary line ?..ok vent over..just annoyed that someone could be so nasty to a plant..why a plant ??
