How about widening the range and appeal of a competition by having two or three categories?
One say for above ground crops e.g. pumpkins, melons, squash etc and one for in or on the ground crops such as carrots, beetroot.

The whole idea of this thread is to guage what YOU want, and as I am spread quite thinly at the moment, did anyone want the task of compiling rules etc etc for this, ie take the reins completely ? [IMG]

I think the idea of 3 different areas is good, as people in smaller gardens may want to grow a LARGE onion, but can't grow a Pumpkin.

We could do something along the lines of decide on what categories - ie longest carrot, biggest pumpkin, biggest tomato, highest sunflower, etc... then we can enter a photo of it, for example, longest carrot - picture of the carrot against a tape measure with a front page of a daily paper to verify the date. the problem is, of course no wind-ups, as in the case of pumpkins, "trick" photography can be used!!!! Once the rules are decided on, then its a case of very little administrating.
But we HAVE to have a category of most RUDE veg!!!!! ooooeer!!!! :D [IMG] for the fun bit

Um. Watch this space - I think I may need some volunteer judges.
I'll outline a competition tomorrow and see what you all think before casting it in stone/clay/peat/compost :D

Size isn't everything and it will be difficult to judge accurately. We don't all grow veggies . How about the perfect rose or similar? Yes - I know that this is the Edible slot, but why stop there? Bring everyone in.

OK here are my proposals for a vegetable competition. What do you think?

The aim is to provide GC contributors with a bit of extra fun during the 2007 growing season.

Categories of vegetables have been limited in order to keep the competition manageable, but should still provide everyone with at least one category in which to compete.

In order to spread the fun over a longer period and also to help keep the competition manageable, the closing dates for each category will be set in different months. These may not in every case be the optimum ââ?¬Å?picking datesââ?¬Â for the vegetables in question.

ââ?¬Å?Sizeââ?¬Â will be based variously on length, weight or diameter measured in metric units and submissions should be in the form of photographs and whenever possible (it may not always be possible) should show evidence of the weight or size claimed.
Submissions will be posted under a thread established for that purpose during a period of one calendar month and will be judged during the first few days of the following month. An associated ââ?¬Å?discussionââ?¬Â thread will run at the same time in order to share ideas or comments.

A general ââ?¬Å?Vegetable Competitionââ?¬Â thread will run throughout the year in order to maintain interest in the competition and to disseminate hints and tips and provide a group shoulder to cry on when things go/grow wrong.

    The Categories and closing dates:

I ââ?¬â?? OVER GROUND. Closing date last day of September.
 Squash ââ?¬â?? Single squash by weight
 Tomato ââ?¬â?? Single tomato by weight
 Cucumber ââ?¬â?? Single by straight line length
 Sunflower a ââ?¬â?? By diameter of flower head measured across seed area (no petals)
 Sunflower b ââ?¬â?? By height measured from soil surface to maximum height of stem
 Bean ââ?¬â?? By straight line length (open to any kind of bean)

II ââ?¬â?? ON THE GROUND. Closing date last day of October.
 Pumpkin ââ?¬â?? Single pumpkin by weight
 Marrow ââ?¬â?? Single marrow by weight
 Melon ââ?¬â?? Single melon by weight
 Onion ââ?¬â?? Single onion by weight
 Turnip or Swede ââ?¬â?? Single by weight
 Beetroot ââ?¬â?? Single by weight

III ââ?¬â?? UNDERGROUND. Closing date last day of November
     Carrot a ââ?¬â?? Single by weight
 Carrot b ââ?¬â?? Single by length (tip of root to top of root)
     Parsnip a ââ?¬â?? Single by weight
 Parsnip b - Single by length (tip of root to top of root)
 Potato ââ?¬â?? Single by weight

IV ââ?¬â?? MRS WHITEHOUSE PROTESTS Closing date last day of November

A single or group of vegetables whose display might be considered likely to raise inordinate lusts and desires in the minds of the lieges or to feature in The Sun or similar newspaper.
