20 odd years ago a young Welsh lad by the name of Factory (apparently called that because his dad lived in one) came round my house a bit lashed up.

After establishing that I had no Welsh music in my collection he went on to point out that he didn't like "Darkies"

I pointed out that he'd never actually seen one, he said that he wouldn't like them if he had & said there is no black in the Union Jack.

I said there is no Draig Goch in it either.

He didn't have a reply to that so I sent him on his way with a half gallon bottle of Rowan Wine, which is my way of saying never come back here again.

        Union flag, simples.

        1. Imagine the diagonal lines as blades
        2. The wider white edges are the cutting edge
        3. The blades always rotate clockwise

It doesn't get simpler than that.

The Union Flag denotes each country within Great Britain with it's colours and stripes, without the actual use of emblems. Each country also has it's own seperate flag which is used on occasions to denote it's individuality from the others. I hope that makes sense Clare. :)

I've always thought that the union flag consisted of the cross of St Patrick (N. Ireland), the cross of St Andrew (Scotland) and the cross of St George (England). Nothing Welsh there, unless I'm missing something. Hence my problem with it.

Wales is a Principality, thats why its flag is not represented.

Shame. St David's flag is yellow and black. Now that would be an interesting mixture! Seriously I don't think anyone should expect a proud Welshman - even one who's in favour of the union - to wave a union flag when Wales isn't represented. I might stick some yellow and black bits on my flag, just to be difficult. :catapult:

First things first - I know I originally put this in the wrong place, I tried to move it but didn't know how, so .... sorry!

I can see I'm going to be on the little green and blue pills for a while yet, because in the village bakers this morning, the man next to me saved me from having to point out their flag faux pas, by explaining it was upside down.

Assistant -"'Ere John, this gentleman says our union jack is upside down"
                'John' appears
Customer - "No. I said your union flag is upside down. It's only a union jack when it's flown at sea."

Now, being natural born pedant in my own right wasn't helped by having a Royal Navy signalman for a Father - so, I popped a couple of me pills and smiled sweetly. We left the shop at the same time at which point the other customer turns to me and says '.. you'd think they'd have known that a union flag only becomes a union jack when it's flown at sea'.

Now, it was my understanding that a union flag only became a 'jack' when flown from the jack staff on board ship, but that all flags flown from that staff are known as 'jacks'.

However, do I remember Dad saying that it was completely and utterly wrong to say that a Royal Navy warship will fly a union jack when 'at sea', because it never does. Only when the first rope hits the quayside or when the ship is at anchor, can that flag be hoisted. The flag flown when at sea is the white Ensign and that is flown from the yard arm.

So, after buying the bread - I popped into the chemist, just to stock up ... !!

If we all had a slice of the flag it would be something else. Just around here we've got the black & white Cornish one, the gold, red & white of Dorset & I think the Somerset one has a Wyvern on it.

:heehee: The 'bad trip' Union Flag. Would anyone notice if it was the wrong way around? I think not.
