Do you have any of her books @JWK

I bought some on Amazon Marketplace for ridiculously small sums of money - her "Colour schemes for the small garden" is available, and in every edition that has ever been published, for pennies ... well ... perhaps not the First Edition!

Freddy they are Weeping Silver Birch (Betula pendula).

When I went to Munstead Wood (Gertrude Jekyll's home) a fortnight ago there was a section of her woodland that was just how I'd imagined it on my design:

I got the idea of the uprooted tree from a photo I took about a year ago, only a lot bigger than this one.

Yep, I kinda figured on a Birch of some kind;)
Do you think there's a chance you might get commissions? And, would you be interested?

Luckily the RHS Wisley garden is on our doorstep with a branch of the Lindley Library so I've been borrowing all her books from there. I have bought copies of the ones I really like, plus there are quite a few biographies well worth reading, one of the best is by Sally Festing and another specifically about her days at Munstead Wood is by Judith Tankard and Martin Wood. My real favourite is "The Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll" by Richard Bisgrove because it has the best of her planting plans brought alive in full colour. Plus he has painstakingly translated all of Miss Jeykll's plant names to their modern equivalents (Bergenia used to be called megaseas for example).

Well if I had won then possibly it might have opened a door to a new career or sideline, whether I would want to do so at my stage of life is another question :)

John, is not now the perfect time? Obviously, it's a bit of a leap of faith, but you clearly have vision, a talent I lack. It has to be worth considering, doesn't it?

No I can't see me doing it Freddy my old fashioned idea of using plants is considered scary, apparently the fashion these days is to dig a big hole and pour in a few tons of readymix.

You'd love all those clients - changing their minds, forcing you to do it wrongly, not understanding your creative direction ...

By the by, I was curious what the plant was you got wrong, and what you labelled it as? You looked surprised that you got one wrong, so I figured you had thought that you recognised them all??

For once I was overly-confident and thought I'd got them all, stupidly I forgot to double check at the end, there was one Jasmine plant but two different Jasmine labels which I hadn't spotted and I used the wrong one. Never mind, that test wasn't given any weight during the judging.

So 9.5 / 10 then. I think you should demand a recount, no? :heehee:

I find this part a bit bewildering. One would hope/think that the winner would know their plants?

Whereas actually the winner was the one who only got 3 / 10 right ...

Ahh, but was it? One sees plenty of modern designs, and as I said, I'm not averse to those. But the vision to create an evolving garden?

Dunno Freddy. But the way I saw it was 2 x Architecture Students, both with close to zero gardening knowledge, and a knowledgeable gardener with a reasonable design, which was backed up by some brilliant associative constructs.

                                "I'm not averse to those."

I am! I detest contemporary gardens. Amazing / Startling the first time you see them, which i can enjoy. After seeing them day-in & day-out for a season they are as boring as a plank of wood that has failed to warp.
