I totally agree. I find them interesting to look at, but there's no evolution...

Anyway, I think they made a mistake, and I'm not just saying that (John);)

"Designed" seems to be the preference for these type of things.

Architects design things which cannot be built
Engineers build things that look awful
People occupying the middle-ground are few & far between ... and I don't know what the collective noun is for them - dare I call them "Johns"?!!

Can anyone tell me how a structure made from several tons of concrete be 'sustainable', considering after the show it will be disassembled and donated to a charity?

Part of the Judging Criteria was "how well the design has considered sustainability issues.", for my design I'd said:

"Materials excavated for the paving will form a bank to screen the “Cenotaph” path. Organic mulch (as Miss Jekyll herself used) minimises the need for watering, fertilizer or weedkiller. Flowers selected are insect magnets and the dense planting encourages wildlife."

            :(

We're in the process of building a conservatory. Foundations 3M deep because there are some Lombardy Poplars "nearby" - although they are quite far away to my eye, not least because they are on the other side of the house that is inbetween. We are on undisturbed clay.

Supposedly Quantity Surveyors (or whatever branch of engineer it was) are under instruction from Government not to over-egg their safety margin on such things (a) to be more Green and b) to stimulate the housing industry by not exacerbating the cost) and my builders were muttering about how daft it all was. Engineer would not budge saying he had to do it by-the-book otherwise the building inspector would just require it to be fixed anyway.

I dread to think how anyone, in future, will get the footings out if they want to change anything ...

Not in my book! How you decide to use your talent is, of course, entirely up to you - however, can I just say that it would be a crying shame not to use or share your talents in some way.

I certainly couldn't have come up with the ideas you did, let alone the corresponding drawings.
