Windy, try freecycle! As you have kids it might be easier to organise.
If you can position the water butt by a drainpipe, you can buy diversion kits which will allow the butt to fill and then divert the water back to the drain. It does involve cutting the drainpipe but it isn't difficult as I have done it several times!

I got my 'free' waterbutts from the local rock factory. I know not everyone has one around the corner like me so...
Find your nearest confectioners and ask them if they have any empty sugar barrels they want to get rid off.

Pop down to your local friendly DIY shop and get a tap (the kind you hammer in). In no time at all you have a new to you water butt.

I'm going to drop a drain pipe off the G-house but just leaving it open would be fine.

    Hi Windy!!!!!

When I was down the "household recycling centre" - better known as the TIP - there were quite a few butts there (and not the white hairy sort of an earlier thread!!!! [IMG] ) - well, actually, yes there were, but back to thread - try down your local tip - you might need to clean one up a bit, but probably will only cost you a couple of Ã?£'s, if not free.

I was going to post the question anew, how difficult is it to fit a water butt onto a drain pipe? Do you need expensive special power tools to cut the drainpipe to fit it?

People on this (very old) thread seem to be saying it is easy, but I am struggling to think how I would do it and what tools I would need. I am getting fairly desperate for a reliable source of rainwater for my plants, but this project looks way beyond my ability.

It feels like it hasn't rained properly for many weeks. I gave my carnivorous plants some stored rainwater from last year, and am running out.

I am happy to buy one, they look reasonably cheap on Amazon, but they look so complicated to fit onto a drain pipe, so maybe I need to improvise something.

Some pictures of what you are trying to do might help.
