i do loads of diy, masking tape is my best friend. if you tape up the bit you dont want to paint it helps a lot. and plenty of dustsheets:redface:
always work from the top down and do the gloss first

People like me, for instance. Cuban red from Wickes Master range. Love it. I think I did the bottom skirting board last to avoid having to clean upo any drips.

I do the ceiling first, using a roller on a pole. I cover all furniture/ carpets which cannot be removed with dust cloths I try and do it all in one mega session to get it over with. If you do the first coat, have a cup of tea and do a bit of gardening, it'll probably be dry enough to recoat when you get back. One problem with rollers is that you have to do the corners/edges with a brush.

Or, leave the rollers in the tray sprinkled with water for a few hours. Be aware there may be drips of water around when you start again.

Absolutely, radiators are hardly a thing of beauty after all, much as I love them.

My dad was a time-served painter and decorator, and he always did gloss work first, then the ceiling, finishing with the walls - I think his theory was that it was easier to get emulsion off a gloss painted surface than vice versa, and to be fair I have followed suit and never had any problems.

One thing I found is absolutely key (other than good prep) is to use good quality brushes - avoid the cheap multipack ones at all costs, and get yourself two or three really good ones.

what a nice name for a paint "Cuban red": it recalls the "carmine encendido" of the most famous Cuban song "Guantanamera".

Gloss looks worse & is more noticeable when it's all over walls after you've painted your doors and skirting boards.

So if I were you, I'd paint the gloss first and then emulsion the walls, then you can touch up anything that's gone on the gloss with a finer brush.
