These days I'd always choose a laptop over a desktop. Mine is on the dining table. When we need the table space for actual dining, I simply push the lid down and move the laptop out of the way.

I don't have a desktop anymore, and don't have Windows issues either as I've got a MacBook. Personally I'd never have a pc again if I could help it. That's why I install Firefox or other browser on work machines! ;)

My advice is use desktops or a tablet, laptops life span is very poor, 2 years and you are lucky.

Unfortunately iPads don't have Flash capability, and a desktop is too restrictive. I've always had laptops and found that Apple ones last longer than 2 years. My husband is in IT so he's pretty clued up :)

Laptops generally last much longer than 2 years. Their batteries don't though. They will fade within a year. Quicker if you leave them plugged in to the mains all the time (which I do, so now my battery lasts about 5 minutes).

One of my old laptops was like that, I never drained the power before charging it. I learned that lesson :)

I would run an anti virus scan just in case something is lurking on your hard drive, I would also check your internet security settings as you might be blocking something on facebook pages if your security settings are too high. Open internet explorer then Tools- Internet Options-Security- Set to Medium High should suit.

I use my laptop connected to the mains with an old battery - just to give me a minute or two to shut down if we have a power cut. My laptop has some fancy electronics to supposedly prevent it charge cycling the battery when connected to the mains, but it definitely doesn't work as the battery was useless within a couple of years. I keep a spare for when I want to use it on-battery and once recharged swap it back for the knackered one.

Over the last 2 years I have inspected numerous laptops that needed motherboard replacements. I spent a few months at citrus knowhow last year and they recon you are lucky if a laptop lasts a year.

I personal we t through three in 15 months. I have now switched to desktops and android.

If you went through 3 in 15 months there would have been something wrong with them. A manufacturers guarantee is 12 months! If they're cheap & cheerful laptops they'll likely not last as long as HP etc, but my previous laptop was the first MacBook Air and I had that for years!

        Ellen,

One of my laptops was high end laptop and my clients aren't cheap either. I advise always go for a desktop and avoid the narrow factor ones.

Desktops last around 6 years before money needs spending on them and advise they get replaced.

Over the last 28 years I have noticed computers not lasting the lifespan they use to.

I agree they don't last as long as they used to, but let's be honest here, anything you buy, if you go through 3 of anything in 15 months, something's not right.

And as for laptop vs desktop, it's also down to what you want a computer for, what your lifestyle is. What is good and better for one person may not be as good and better for another.

Try running your anti virus just in case you have picked up a virus or trojan. Then have a look at security options in case your security is too high. Open browser, go to tools, internet options, security , then set to medium high , see if it makes any difference.

The laptop vs desktop quality thing is a debate that could go on forever.

Both can feature good parts or cheap parts or a combination of both. Both can have design or manufacturing flaws. Take the Toshiba Thinkpads. When the screen failed on my mate's new one, he was told by the helpdesk person that the screen wont be covered, because it will have been accidental damage, because 'that's what we're told to say when its a screen problem'. Made us think, they get a lot of screen failures.

Likewise, certain makes of 3.5 inch hard disk (as found in desktops) are known to be prone to failure.

I gave my son my old laptop. Its about 6 year old now, and apart from a dodgy battery, is still going strong. I put Linux on it because its too low spec now to run Windows. I set it up so that it boots up, logs straight in, and then opens the browser on the CBeebies page.

The laptop I'm on now is maybe 3 year old and still going strong (apart from a rubbish battery). Its not a top end make, it is emachines, which is pretty cheap.
