I know what you mean Mum. I actually have a Diploma in Computing and was in it right at the beginning (Remember the TRS 80 and the ZX 81?) I was even in a discussion group deciding on the choice of machine for the BBC computer. But, the Interweb things has passed me by, largely. Though I am probably more 'savvy' than a lot of folks.
Now Zig, that would be naughty. They are actually very nice young folks so I may tell them................................eventually.

OMG, Palustris!! Yes, indeed I do remember the ZX series! I recall a post a few (short) months ago on that very topic. It holds endearing memories for me because a) my big bro thought I was a worthy candidate for his "recycling" of his ZX80 and b) because of the laughter we shared over my confusion of the "rubout" button  What the ? was a roobout button?? :dunno:

These days, it's called the "delete" button  :roflol:

Way off the topic but. Gran won a twin tub on spot the ball ..she tried it a few times and went back to washing with a coal fired boiler. So I am told.
Do hope you sort out the laptop. If all other programmes work fine it woud seem like the network / modem connection is at fault if you fail to sort it out PM for phone and I will talk you through it.

Thanks Hans, but this is a PC not a laptop. System Restore gave us back the Connection.

What you have is a broadband ROUTER, often referred to as a MODEM by people who don't know much about IT. A modem is a MODULATOR DE-MODULATOR (Data Fax Modem 56K) The lost connection is nothing to do with your computer in sleep mode but it has everything to do with the router. What you should do is to re-boot the router by switching it off or unplugging, wait a minute or two then switch back on. Most routers from broadband companies come preconfigured with customer details and are set up to plug and play. There is also a button on every router I have come across to reset to manufacturers settings. You can tell if you have a modem or router by: If you get instant access to the internet when your computer boots up, you have broadband; A ROUTER. If you have to connect when you open your browser and you computer sounds like it is dialing a phone number then you have a modem. I hope this explains modems and routers to you.

We do not have LINE based Broadband, we have it through a Satellite dish. So what we have connected to the Satellite is described as a Modem by the company which supplied the equipment. It does not have Wireless capability. We could have had a Router, but since we only have one machine there was little point.
