Suicide can not be described as either brave or cowardly.

Self preservation is one of, if not the strongest of our built in instincts. When we're of sound mind, it is impossible to seriously attempt suicide because our self preservation instinct is stronger than any logical thought.

People can only seriously attempt suicide when they are mentally ill, to the point where they are beyond reason, and far beyond logic. So normal everyday attributes like bravery, cowardice, selfishness etc dont really work. That most sad thing when someone attempts (successfully or not) to commit suicide, is that so often nobody spotted it coming and took steps to help. Part of the reason for this is there is still, even in this day and age, a stigma attached to mental illness. If you started developing recurrent pains in your chest, most people would waste no time in telling someone and seeking help. If you see someone in the street get hit by a car, most passers-by would pull their mobile phones out and phone 999 without delay. But when someone is mentally poorly, they so often wont tell anyone, and if those around them notice, they so often bury their heads in the sand.

So, when someone reaches the point when they believe in their very poorly mind that suicide is logical, you can't describe them as brave or cowardly. Just ill, needing help before they hurt themselves or others.

I lost my Grandad, Uncle and best mate to suicide. I'll post about it sometime. All three were in different circumstances. One was about as selfish as it gets, one was medically related and the other is exactly as you describe above.

This statement is not true; "When we're of sound mind, it is impossible to seriously attempt suicide because our self preservation instinct is stronger than any logical thought." The relative who my family think was selfish and who told us in his suicide note that he was committing suicide for his own reasons proved otherwise.

The family member who committed suicide after living in unbearable physical pain for twenty years was the bravest person I'll ever meet.
