I hope you have all the provisons you need for the next few days until the storm and floods recede.

As I am in Cumbria, literally a stones throw from the Isle of Man, we are also getting hit pretty bad now with many areas flooding and houses ruined once again. Many roads closed and impassable.

After the recent severe floods here in Cockermouth that made national news, our new flood defences appear to be holding, but in Keswick (upstream to us) where new defences where also installed, the water is now overflowing those and will eventually hit Cockermouth, along with the rest of the rain coming off the fells, I hope Cockermouth's defences can cope!

We live atop a small hill so are out of flood danger

Evacuation notices just issued to residents in Cockermouth High Street, roads into Cockermouth now flooded and closed, river is rising rapidly with another 3 inches of rain forecast in the next few hours. Red flood warnings right across the county now, situation changing constantly as I type.

Sorry Sheal for the slight hijack here, hope you and yours are well.

    Steve...:)

So sorry to read about this on your beautiful island and I just hope that eventually everything gets back to normal for you all as I know how much the island depends on tourism and all the people that come over to the island for the TT races.:grphg:

There has been no mention of any of this on the main news over here on the mainland the only bit I read about in the mail was about that light aircraft coming down but just no mention of your floods:sad:

I'm sorry your area is going through this as well @Steve R. I think what makes it worse is the fact there's nothing that we can do but watch and wait and hope the worst passes us by. I hope that you all remain safe and there's as little damage as possible.

            Thank you FC and Kandy.

@Kandy you will rarely see any reports about the island on the mainland, any news you do hear usually relates to something that the rest of Britain has a connection with, sadly, like the missing pilot/aircraft.

The severe gale is now starting to drop here and will die down by morning. Further strong to gale force winds and rain will return tomorrow evening.

@Sheal and @Steve R We hope you are both OK and that it settles down soon.

According to the forecast I saw, there will be some lighter rain today and then it will start clearing up. Unfortunately, that still leaves all the run-off coming from the hills and surrounding land.

OMG!! Just read the news about the dreadful weather in parts of the UK. Instantly thought of Sheal and now Steve R. What a nightmare it all seems. Let's hope it passes soon and you all get through it safe and sound.

                        Thank you all. :)

The flooding has retreated in most areas and hopefully we won't get to much rain this coming week to trigger it again.

There has been a landslide in Laxey that has put homes under threat. Although after inspection it's said to be currently stable, there is further risk should we have more rain.

How are things in your area @Steve R ?

As many have probably seen now, Cumbria is all over the news today...but no mention of the Isle of Man, which is really annoying considering what we all know from Sheal. Southern Ireland has also been mentioned too!

What remains uppermost in my mind is the county council official being interviewed by the local TV news crew about the newly completed flood defences. He explained that the first four foot was a solid wall and how in future flood events, the rising water itself would "float" up the secondary higher glass level, the point being that "no flood would ever get that high again", couple of years later and it did and overwhelmed them.

2009 was a very bad year, Cockermouth, Keswick and Workington where flooded, this year it is much more widespread, more towns and over a much larger area so the infrastructure and support is now less. We have lost bridges again, and a couple of roads too due to landslips.

Floods are receding in some areas.

I was chatting to a shop owner around ten days ago in Cockermouth and he was telling me how shop keepers in Cockermouth could not get flood insurance so it is likely that the many independent shops we had on our high street, will now be finished for good.

This is going to take a long time to fix this time, due to the high amount of damage over so many towns and villages.

                          Steve...:)

I have been watching the news on and off throughout the day - just horrible to see so much devastation.

Whilst I can accept that this storm brought a remarkable amount of rain, I do think that our governments and councils have had a part to play in all this, and in more than one area. Going by what seems to be normal practice where I am, the first problem is that our roads are not properly maintained (bear with me here) - street sweeping lorries are now a fairly rare sight, which means that the sides of the roads get all gunked up with silt and weeds; it then rains hard, washing all that silt and debris into drains that are equally unmaintained. Some of those drains have collapsed or broken pipes (there are tons like that around here), and the ones that haven't collapsed or broken can barely handle normal rainfall thanks to all the debris and silt.

Then we get to the rivers and streams, and they too are silted up badly. Only last week, I looked at the Thames around Kew area, and it looks really badly silted up - - the river bed certainly appears higher than I recall it looking years ago. Surely a common sense approach would be to dredge these rivers and use the dredged up material to form higher river banks in appropriate areas.

Lastly, why are we not building infrastructure to carry and hold the water - reservoirs/aquifers or even hydro-electric schemes (reversible pump power stations for example)

Perhaps we should stop giving money away to foreign countries, and spend it here where it is needed.

                            .

I have only just caught up with this on here, @Sheal, and @Steve R, it must be heartbreaking to see first hand unlike us just seeing it on the news, agreed, NO mention of the IOM at all.
We have been fortunate in only having strong and severe gales down here.
