Thanks Beckie. :) My own home didn't suffer any damage and the island as a whole is pretty much back to normal. It's fortunate that most of the ground here isn't flat so the water drains very quickly.

Yup, that's correct and it worked fine so we don't need large concrete walls and they would stick out like a sore thumb in an area where most buildings are stone built. We just need what we have in place, just larger.

We have stayed in today, we did not need to go out so no point in adding to the melee of sightseers, news crews, and work teams. But going by the local news the floods have receded now from the towns and villages, the river Greta (Keswick) drops very quickly so was back in its banks yesterday, the River Derwent (Cockermouth) will take a few days longer, its this one that goes past the bottom of our village and our allotment site's.

      Steve...:)

With the water level down the clean up and repair work can start. What a miserable time for everyone in the area, with Christmas ruined for many too. Has it affected your own home Steve?

@Steve R If I remember correctly your allotments are on a hill. Did the flood come up that far?

I saw the interview on TV with the owner of the Toy Shop in the High Street. He had a very positive view of things and reckoned that he would be open for business again with the week.

Do you know how badly Percy House was hit? Mrs Shiney has some of her stuff in there.

        Hi Shiney,

Yup our allotmnent site is at the bottom of the hill that I live on, we live atop the hill so unaffected by the floods. There is another plot between mine and the river, then a footpath then its another few metres down to normal river level, but at this point on the river it can spread out over the flood plain so although it's out of it's banks and it is a moving sea there, there is no real danger of it flooding our allotment site.

As for Percy house, we have not heard anything about that end of town nor have we seen it on any of the news reports either national or local. As you know the River Cocker is just a stones throw from Percy house and I believe this time around it was initially the River Cocker that flooded first.

We are going out shopping this morning, if the bridge is safe and open we will have a little look and see.

        Steve...:)

          Thanks :dbgrtmb:

I've just had a look on their website and they have just posted about it. This is what they say -
"Percy House has been flooded but not to the same extent as in 2009. Internet and telephone services are temporarily down, but we hope to be up and running again as soon as possible."

Hi Shiney, high street was closed off but we followed a van in :heehee: and down over the bridge to Percy House, it was as you know flooded but there where three people inside cleaning up. They had just got electricity back to half of the shop front.

I was told Mrs Shiney's beautiful glassware was safe and intact and they intend to re-open asap.

I did have my camera with me but felt it would be wrong to take photo's of others misfortune.

It was gutting traveling down the high street to see shop contents, out on the pavement. Poor souls!

          Steve...:)

Absolutely right @Steve R good on yer . We had the dubious pleasure of being dramatically flooded by The Clyde when it broke all records in 1994 and those records stand today by metres. The day after we flooded I eventually got out of the house (trapped in it for nearly 36 hours with neither the police of fire brigade being able to get to us) and immediately went to see my daughter (aged 7) who had been lifted out of the house by the fire brigade, husband and I thought it wouldn't be THAT bad and stayed behind in the house ...big mistake!
After visiting my daughter at her school dressed in full waders I was on my way back down to my house. It had a long narrow driveway and blocking MY driveway was a huge 4x4 with some man out of his car busy videoing MY house. I beeped my horn to try and get him to move his car so I could get down MY driveway. The man ignored me and kept on videoing, I wound down my window and asked him to move, he just said he'd move when he was good and ready........I completely lost it. I got out of my car and ran at him saying I was going to kill him (me at about 40 and weighing about 9 1/2 stone, he was about 6ft 2ins and 30ish!) he rushed back into his car and moved it so I could get passed which I did.
About 2 hours later while I was still in shock wandering around my devastated home and garden the police arrived. The man had evidently videoed me flying at him saying I was going to kill him and wanted me charged, pathetic creature doesn't quite hack it!
The policeman was incredibly nice about the whole affair and was 100% sympathetic to me. He said he had to go through the motions with the pathetic/horrid man and said he'd seen the video and "wow were you scary"!:) He then told me he'd deleted the video "by mistake":) so the man had no evidence to try and prosecute me. God when you think things can't get worse they might have done. Whether the police nowadays would have been able to treat the ridiculous case as they did then I have my doubts. Gold:star:Steve for not adding to others misery. As for looters trying their luck which we also had to contend with, the whole affair tested my diminishing faith in humans!

              And on a lighter note...

A farmer who had a small number of cattle swept away by the floods has had most of them returned alive. Friends and neighbours helped in the search and one was found 20 miles away...on a Golf Course...grazing!

              Steve...:)

Kendal, Keswick and Appleby flooding again, Glenridding flooding for a third time. Contractors hired to "fix" flood devastated properties are racing to save their equipment.

13 environment agency flood warnings in place that mean floods are expected, many bridges and roads still closed. More flooding expected over Christmas.

River Teviot across local roads again and thats happened with a short shower. We will be swept out and over to Holland if a long downpour hits us at this rate.

What a miserable time everyone's having up there Steve. There needs to be some serious thinking done about how these problems can be improved if not solved.

We had some flooding again yesterday but nowhere near as bad as last time.

It is a terrible situation, and I am so sorry to see and hear of all those suffering at this time of year; something radical definitely needs done to prevent this happening in future.

Sorry to hear again about all the flooding up in the Lakes and I hope that things get better in the months ahead and we have a hot summer to dry it all up:smile:

I see we have Eva on her way which could cause more problems and I have seen a list that shows there is one of these storms named after me but hopefully my namesake won't cause too much damage when it eventually comes:th scifD36:
