Someone sent a pic into Gardeners World mag of some beans they'd grown in a tub up a big old umbrella, just the ribs.

Looked quite attractive with the beans hanging down.

My raised bed is 4' wide, and the paths about 18" - so if I plant the rows 1' apart, say, I can angle the supports outwards at a reasonable angle, and then up-and-over the path.

    Something like that !

I think retaining the "X-Frame" would make the angle of the "arch" more shallow, which will help with picking, but it could be vertical with a wider "top" to the arch

Looks very good, as long as the top of the frame isn't out of reach.

Just a final comment to the experiment. As said earlier each plant grown on the new frame produced about 40% more beans than the control groups (although there were a few plants that didn't do well). The control groups lasted almost two weeks longer than the ones on the frames but they didn't give a great deal of crop during those two weeks.

All in all - it was quite successful :dbgrtmb:

Yes, Sheal, I'll continue to do it as I now have the posts and wires permanently in place. :blue thumb:

Zigs, it was a bit of a slow start this season but beans soon catch up. As I start them all off in the greenhouse I don't have to wonder if they are going to germinate in situ and I gorw enough extras to compensate for slug attack. We lost about 15% to slug attack but the beans planted through the weed inhibitor did better than those not protected. I did use slug pellets when I found there was a major offensive by the slugs. I sprinkled them lightly along the plastic about 2ft from the rows of beans and so they didn't get near the beans.

The new way of growing the beans gave us the best crop ever despite the vagaries of the weather.
