    I think that the point of this thread was to admit my shame. I deserved no sympathy yet everyone at the hospital to a man and woman said that it was understandable (apparently it is the most common cause of paracetamol overdosing).

    No. It turns out that I have broken the molar at one of its roots. My delay in getting it treated (it wasn't too painful for the first day or so so I decided to wait for my regular dentist to return from India) allowed infection to creep in though which is why the pain escalated.

    I did have an abscess several years ago and I lanced it myself. Sue almost passed out watching:heehee:

    I should have been so lucky!

    The main reason for my embarrassment is that even as I was popping the pills I understood the danger. Yet I was desperate enough to kid myself that I was being methodical about it and I would be ok:dunno:

    They are hopeful that my recovery will be complete, although in agreeing to letting me leave they insisted on further blood and urine tests.

    I was lucky enough to get an hours sleep last night:hapydancsmil:
    You're correct about being upright - even better was gentle walking. But for the first four hour session on the drip I had to remain in bed hooked up to the machines. They insisted that I did all my toilets in a thingy so that they could check for blood though. But for the ten and 16 hour sessions I was allowed to wander for twenty minute sessions.

    But bourbon makes me just plain daft:dunno:
    Everyone has their poison - for my other half it's gin which makes her plain nasty. Back in our youth we used to load a mate of ours up with Vodka if we were bored.

      Gin is the same with me @longk - makes me nasty/violent, and I am normally anything else but.

      You have my every sympathy when it comes to dental pain - I am terrified of dentists and needles, and as a result of that coupled with smoking like a barbeque for years, and the usual Scottish high sugar diet meant that I went to hell and back on more than one occasion with my teeth. In the past I have even sterilized tools as best I could to use them to dig bits of teeth out or to lance abscesses - not good.

      I now have a really good, understanding dentist who plods away with me keeping what teeth I have left in semi-reasonable shape, but I lost a hell of a lot - I have no molars at all in fact.

      There is no pain like it, and I sincerely hope you are pain free very soon indeed.

              Dentists I'm fine with but needles produce a physical panic attack. Just putting the catheter in raised my heartbeat by 30 to 40bpm!

              So have i. Which is the main reason that this whole episode escalated the way it did. I should have let one of his partners attend to it immediately.

              I've broken lots of bones over the years and that is nothing more than a scratch compared to dental pain.

              In a near impossible attempt at joviality I said to the doctor in A&E that I wished I'd just gone out and scored some Charlie. A lot less dangerous was his response.

              I used to think like that, but over the last few years it has bit me on the ass.

              Not happening.

              @longk my 22 year old daughter has been needle phobic all her life! so i feel for you ! its a nightmare with her as she is epileptic so at times needs blood tests! you can imagine!! anyway she will not have a needle in her mouth so has to go to sedation to have any work done! the dentist wont push her i think he is scared of her having a seizure through stress so she gets sedated

                @longk - any idea how long before your dentist can remove the tooth (I know you said once the infection is cleared up) and ... more importantly ... have you been able to secure an appointment to have it done!!!!?

                As pathetic as it sounds it is no laughing matter.

                Mine is likewise/

                He phoned me last night and said Tuesday, but if I cannot hold out he will do it earlier.

                Update;
                Ice pack! My dentist told me that if I applied an ice pack and could get through the pain increasing for 30 minutes to an hour it would then subside dramatically. It has!!! And the infection has been drawn out from under the tooth to such an extent that it is now visible in the side of the gum (much like using magnesium sulphate to draw a boil to the surface). The initial increase in pain was beyond words but when it peaked it just fell away.
                I wish that;
                1. I'd known this on Wednesday night
                2. I had stuck at it last night instead of waiting till 8am today:doh:

                    Frankly if pills work then it's not needed. And the increase in pain to start with was evil.
                    At the moment I have no pain. This could be
                    • that the antibiotics are working, although the ice pack has pulled the swelling out to the side of the gum as opposed to it being under the tooth (I really don't understand why this could be though).
                    • That I have a constant supply of painkiller going through me. I log my intake now.
                    • A combination of the above.
                    Whatever, I don't care. I have never had a pain that morphine would not touch so to go from being close to tears when I started this thread to where I am now is joyful.
                    And I will never take medicines for granted now. Having survived 15 years of recreational drug use and close to 25 years of very hard social drinking with (at the last check up) a healthy liver I almost destroyed that in one night of pain induced madness.

                      What a nightmare Longk! With that sort of pain I wouldn't have waited for the dentist but gone straight to A&E! Glad to hear it's improved. :)

                        @Sheal ...I was so desperate I tried A&E but they wouldn't entertain me...Just said it to see my dentist which I had but like Longk had to wait for the infection to go.
