I always ask politely if I'm requesting something, but I don't actually use the word "please", and I rarely give a reason. I think our local rules advocate minimal verbage otherwise people pour out endless sob stories in a bid to get the item, I think.

I was giving away a child's car seat that would cost well in excess of £100 new. One chap (the first to ask) said he'd call round for it after 5PM today, so I agreed, and made a point of rushing back home to be in when he arrived. No show, no email saying sorry can't make it tonight or anything.

I'm annoyed because someone else also asked for it, but I said I already had someone coming for it. If the first chap hasn't contacted me by tea time tomorrow, I'll email the other girl and see if she still wants it. In the meantime I've mentioned it on Facebook because there seems to be a baby boom round here at the moment, so I figured someone local who might be a friend of a friend my want it.

I have often put plants on freecycle when I am lifting and dividing and they usually go super quick! It was also useful when we were clearing out my Mum's house after she died.
