I hope the male doesn't pine for her too much.. So sad to see such a mighty and graceful bird in a predicament like that, but at least she had help at the end.. Nice one Yvonne you certainly did your bit for nature there..

Yvonne that was so brave & compassionate of you! Such a great thing to do. If the male had chosen to defend his mate he could well have caused some damage! So sorry to hear the outcome :( Swans mate for life, hope he gets the help he needs as well. Maybe the nest can be visited & the eggs taken to be incubated & the young saved & eventually released?

That was brave, swans can be very scary. I don't think I'd have had the persistence or resourcefulness to do what you did, well done.

What a sad ending after all your efforts Yvonne:sad: You did your very best:grphg:...That's the thing with wild creatures they hide illness very well so as not to show weakness and by the time they do get found more often than not it's too late for them:sad:

You were very brave as we all know swans can be dangerous but you did the right thing but what a sad outcome. The male will pine but may possibly again next year.

Thanks everyone for your very kind comments. I don't think I deserve to be called a hero or brave, I got in the canal because I knew I capable of dealing the the depth, temp etc, and I had a good coat on so I calculated that the male could only do so much damage and I thought it was worth the risk.

I knew if I walked away, the guilt would haunt me, so doesn't that mean I did it more for me than for the Swan?

The guilt would only have haunted you Yvonne because you knew you would be leaving a sick bird to fend for itself, that doesn't mean you were doing it for yourself. If you had left it and gone back the following day to check and had found it dead, you would have felt even worse. Don't beat yourself up! :)

Sheal & Jenny are right, you did the right thing for the swan. I think you probably would have done the same had it been summer & you didn't have the coat, etc. What you did certainly wasn't the act of self :)
