Thanks GG......I was just interested to know what 'X' would be like. I'm not in the market for a new laptop at the moment although mine is four years old now. At this time I have a lot of issues with it so it needs to see a 'doctor' pretty soon. I'm also struggling to get power to it so it could give up the ghost any time.

Returning, collection tomorrow. I got on well with windows8 and found it reasonably simple to navigate.
This new laptop keeps freezing, restarting, configuring etc. It locked me out Sunday and it took ages before I could sign in, as it kept turning off half way through my password. I let all the updates come through so it`s not that, every other day I have a problem, so returning while i still can, already ordered a replacement as I did not want an exchange. :pcthwack::pcthwack::pcthwack:

Also, @DIY-Dave what do you think 8 is like for gaming with the upcoming rollout of DirectX 12?

Can't comment as I don't have the luxury of spare time to be able to indulge in some gaming.
I can't see Microsoft dropping the ball on gaming though as traditionally it's always been a very strong market for them.

                  Moi!
Cor it aint half fast and quiet too.
I don't like the standard Windows 8.1 GUI but Classic Shell has sorted that problem so I can now navigate the PC without all those 'cartoons'.
Spent about 5 hours today trying to get 'old' XP PC and 'new' 8.1 PC networked with only partial success. Old PC can get full access to all files on new PC, but old PC is very coy about allowing new PC full access - can see the files but old PC won't allow full access.
However thanks to a 1TB external drive that I used to backup most files I've now got most of the important files across and I've also just discovered that the colour printer that I thought wouldn't run under 8.1 does run. Also got the software that I use to interface with my radio equipment up and running which is a major relief.

My XP machine has just expired so, today, had to move over to a Windows 8 machine that I had avoided using. I think Gay Gardener's video was far too kind.

My PC running XP will need upgrading soon . Looking at the Youtube vids on Windows 8 :yikes: Thankfully Windows 10 should be well established by then.

@HarryS I upgraded from XP to Windows 7, last summer and am getting on well with 7. Although I did need to get a new motherboard and CPU as the old one couldn't run 7. I expect similar problems when I eventually upgrade again.
