I've lost a Passionflower to a cold wind that whistles down a passage between our house and the next and hits the poor thing first. But other people around here seem to grow them fine, so it might just be that location. Once they take hold, there's no stopping them!

Remember, any flowering plant might decide to only flower on the other side of the fence (ie, your neighbours) just to annoy you!

 There is nothing worse than a windy passage.

I am very tempted to try a passion flower. I have always assumed they are difficult to grow, because the flowers make them look kinda specialist. That does sound ridiculous, I know!

    How quickly do they grow?

Have just looked up Euonymus... sounds like a smotherer, so it might not work in harmony with other things like clematis

    Once established, fast!

A friend has one and it covered her pergola in two years. They need tying in to begin with but soon learn the way.

Your namesake on here, our lovely Victoria, in Portugal will tell you that over there they are a real nuisance as they send out suckers and come up everywhere, but I don't think that happens here much.

Go on, for the price of a plant, you know you want to...

Don't tempt me! I've just cleared a huge patch today at the side of the house, and have convinced my husband that my newly planted saxifrage (which I bought from the garden centre this morning) has been there all along, over shadowed by the hundreds of blue bells and daffs!

I'm not supposed to be buying plants til we go voucher spending on saturday!

Victoria, you say your neighbours are nice and that you dont want to offend them by covering up. Time to talk with them and expllain that you need the cover to protect your veggies, they will fully understand that and you will have wind protection for your veggies and a clean line of view ...so to speak...its a win-win situation for you started by simply talking.

My neighbour the other side of this fence..

..knew I was erecting the trellis to grow things up before I did it...and not to close her out. That conversation took less than two minutes, she knows I'm a keen gardener and she fully understood and said "no problem".

    Steve...:)
