Looks like Mowgley is currently winning our 'who's got the most snow' competition.

We've got around 4 inches laying here at present, with more to come late on Sunday apparently.

While waiting for a haircut in the barber's shop this morning I had a quick glance at their copy of the Express. According to that esteemed journal, the army is on standby to cope with what could become a 'full scale national emergency'.

    So no exaggeration there then.

I think that most of our national emergencies are the gutter press itself - and their scandalously untrue publishings!

We just watched Winterwatch :The Big Freeze 1963 on BBC2.
I remember it well. Also the food shortage because deliveries
couldn't get through. Makes me realise it's not that bad this year - yet!
and I am so thankful for all the neighbours who keep calling round to see
            if us oldies are ok.

            Anybody else watch it?

Well, I have to say that I am embarrassed on behalf of all the people that live in my part of the world - Heathrow have disgraced us all.

I live pretty close to Heathrow (as the map below shows), and as I mentioned yesterday the snowfall here wasn't all that much - so little after all the hype in fact that I was disappointed! It has all but disappeared today, and there is only 2cm-6cm forecast (with a 40% probability of actually happening) tomorrow - and yet they have cancelled 20% of their flights already! 6cm! My index finger is bigger!

I agree, the place is a real embarrassment when you hear how much they have spent on snow clearing equipment.
I think good old Health and safety have to shoulder their share of the blame.

Health & Safety I have no issue with, unless of course it is being enforced in an overly vigorous fashion. If Heathrow had reported some delays during the afternoon yesterday, particularly between 1130 and 1330hrs, then fair play - that was the peak of the snowfall, and even it was lying on treated roads at that point (not to a level that I would have called dicey, but a car/van/bus/coach is a completely different story to a jumbo jet.

We (as in bus operators) were heavily criticised a few years back when we had heavy snowfall and took the buses off the road; in my area, we had 12-18 inches of snow, and throughout the morning on the day that the buses were not running I, along with fellow managers, took buses out ourselves to assess the road conditions so that we could get things running again at the earliest opportunity - - - I can assure you, sliding sideways down the road in a double decker is no fun, because we did it a few times on that day.

However, that was exceptional, and every time snow has fallen since, it has only been certain roads that we have had to give a miss if they are too bad.

Heathrow have given up on tomorrow before a single flake has fallen - if I did that with my bus services, I would be out of a job before the end of the week.

I watched it, it was just before I was born. Parents said it was cold but here in leicestershire it was nothing like 1940/1947. They often talk about the snow covering double decker buses and having to walk over cars for 7 miles to get to work. In 1940 my dad had to walk 7 miles to work and then delivery groceries to surrounding villages.

If it happened now with the heath and safety rules and the general laziness it would be chaos.

For many years my father-in-law, and many others, had to work overnight standing on the back of an open truck in the icy weather to shovel sand and and grit onto the roads. I once asked how he could work in such cold weather and he replied it was
                  very warm work!

No health and safety in those days!

Yes, we had snow, but the sea keeps us slightly warmer here and it's all but gone today.

Folly Mon would love this picture, but he's not around at the moment.

I hope they have it all sorted by 2 weeks time as I fly out from the dreaded T5 to Barcelona, for my Med cruise. :th scifD36:
