Thank you all so much for the useful information! I've got a couple of those half-barrel planters free as I gave a neighbour my blueberry bushes, so I might try growing them in those. I think I'll try a variety from each supermarket initially and see how it goes. I'm trying to improve my cooking skills lately and it sounds like you can make some fantastic dishes with them! I particularly like the idea of using them in a gratin dauphinois alternative as I'm not keen on spuds except when roasted. How many tubers should I plant in each container, would about 3 suffice, or should I just plant the contents of an entire bag? Another consideration is would half-barrels be deep enough for them to thrive? Sorry, I just have no experience of growing vegetables!

    Thanks again,

    Nick

They don't need a great depth of soil and I think it's very sensible of you to plant them in containers. If they're full-size 1/2 barrels, perhaps 5 tubers in each should give you an excellent crop. Bear in mind that they get very tall.

Thanks, Hazel! Yes, I was thinking with that eventual height they'd probably end up looking a bit awkward on the patio where the half-barrels presently are. I'll move them somewhere less prominent before planting.

Oh, well considering the fact that both bags will only cost me about £3.50, then perhaps it's best to plant the entire bags' contents, as they only seem to contain 5-8 tubers anyway and the knobbly type seems quite small. :)
