It's an idea I had dismissed as too much effort just thinking it was somewhere to steal a few extra weeks either side of the season, but I suppose it would be useful as a nursery for hardening off etc.

I'm not sure how to tell what's what at this time of the year everything is looking dead. I need to read up on pruning etc as I haven't a clue what should be done, hopefully it's not too late to prune them if they need it @pete ?

Its not really a pruning thing John.
Raspberrys get virus infected and it makes the berries small or even non existant, leaves are usually yellowish.
I had some really good autumn fruiting ones, but within a year or two year they stopped fruiting, I sprayed the lot with glyphosate.
There are lots of abandoned ones on my site that just spread the virus.

I think its also suggested that you renew strawberry plants every three years or so.

John, what I did when I had my raised beds, was to take out a spit depth of soil (put to one side) and fork through the bottom. I then replaced the soil which raised the level considerably. At the same time, I incorporated a mix of well rotted manure, loam and MP compost. This brought the level up to the top of the boards. Using this method would probably be way too expensive in your case, but the double digging would be very beneficial, I think. Obviously you are constrained by time, but over a period you could work your way through it. Sorry if I'm teaching a granny to suck eggs, just sharing my own experience

Doesn`t look as if it`s been vacant long John, can you believe my daughter and her partner forgot to go and pick their allotment yesterday, IF they get one now it will be the worst.

Mrs JWK will be impressed, crops only 24 hrs after taking it on. They might give some idea with crop rotation.

Have you located the rhubarb yet? Met anybody else there?

Yes I've mostly worked out what had been grown in each bed, remains of runner beans, carrots, broccoli etc. That was one of the reasons for popping down there this morning so I don't grow the same things again in the same beds, the other reason to try and identify the soft fruit - I'll start a thread in the ID section as I am not sure what's what.

I didn't see any rhubarb, there is a big area that's just grass and I wonder what's going to pop up in there, should rhubarb be appearing now?

There was no-one else down there, a bit surprising as it was a lovely morning.

Here's the area (in the foreground) at one end of my plot that's all grass, I wonder why it's been left like that, hopefully Rhubarb or Asparagus will pop up, so I won't spray it off for the time being.
