Just got back in. Temperature is under control. Blood pressure and pulse are close to normal. No sign of any secondary lurgies thankfully.

I've been given my orders though. I have to stay on the paracetamol and ibuprofen, stay cool, I have to get wife to keep checking on my temp, and I'm to do exactly nothing except drink plenty. Oh and I'm not allowed to go to work tomorrow. Doctor recommends I stay off all week unless I make a miraculous recovery, but as she could see I didn't like that idea, she insisted that at least I stay off definitely tomorrow. Apparently the body needs rest when its fighting flu.

One mildly amusing part of the whole consultation was where doc said although not exactly unusual to hallucinate with flu, it is more common in kids than adults. At that point she glanced at the document the paramedic had asked me to take in, and just said "oh, that would do it". She'd looked at the temperature reading from when paramedic first checked me.

EDIT: Nearly forgot to mention, I told doc of the confusion and mild amnesia and how frustrating its getting. She told me its normal with flu because it 'batters your brain in' (she is a northern doctor after all).

Please keep observing yourself for possible mental relapse clueless. If it happens again, then contact your A & E at once. You may need a scan IMHO,

I know. I appreciate your concern, just as I'm quite blown away by the kind words of all of Team GC. I was just making light of the situation.

Doc was quite serious with me, as was the paramedic last night, and the other doc that phoned my after the paramedic had left. All made it abundantly clear that the situation must be taken very seriously because although I'm mostly ok now, things can change quite rapidly so wife and I have to watch out for any new symptoms, and if any happen, we're to phone the ambos immediately. I've been left with the distinct impression that had we not been in a time of cost cuts and national poverty, I'd be in hospital under observation, if only because of the freaky hallucinations and dangerously high core temp from yesterday. I even have to have an alarm set for 4 hours after I go to bed, to make sure I top up on the paracetamols, because apparently the paracetamol is currently the main thing that's keeping the temperature down. Paracetamol wears off, temp climbs rapidly, and my brain starts going wrong again.

Before this, I was vaguely aware that flu is a nasty lurgy, but I thought it was only a threat to those who already have existing medical conditions, or the very old. I didn't realise it could take a normal healthy, physically fit bloke in his prime and nearly wipe him out.

You are not alone in underestimating the effects of flu clueless - many people don't understand exactly what a flu involves, mainly because the flu's that they think they have had in the past have in fact been really bad colds.

Back in the 90's, I caught the Asian flu that was rife - middle of summer too - and I genuinely thought I was dying on more than one occasion. I spent around a week flat out in bed (was peeing in bucket over the side of the bed), and it took a good six weeks before I was beginning to get back to myself. Thankfully, I have only had flu one more time since, and it wasn't just as bad.

Please, please take your illness seriously and take good care of yourself - and more importantly, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice if you are in any doubt about anything. Even once you start to feel better, make sure that you don't over exert yourself, keep your fluid intake up, and don't subject yourself to too much cold or damp.
