What is it about chickens that's so magic? It seems to me that just about every culture I know of has a chicken soup recipe for when people are poorly.

It is reputed that for centuries Chicken soup has been one of the best remedies for the common cold and congestion cure - so drink up and enjoy.

I haven't really got much in the way of snot and congestion. Sore throat, ear ache, head ache when its nearly time for the next dose of paracetamol, and I start going a bit weird if my temperature is allowed to drift up, but not much congestion.

Good to see you talking positively about food clueless. Good sleep and good food are still the best medicine for recovery. How's your head this morning? Keep drinking water or LUCOZADE. Gosh- that brings back memories of childhood convalescence....

I have got some snot, but not loads. I don't tend to get snot very much. Well I do, but I have ways of dealing with snot. Rosemary oil in my nostrils at bed time (although not at the same time as aspirin/ibuprofen or any other anti-inflammatory). In waking hours, lots of spicy food and drink usually does it.

Still, I hope I don't get the snot in large doses next week.

Hope the recovery is still going well Clueless.
How's Mrs. Clueless shaping up as a nurse then? Catering to your every need I trust.

I hope she's better at nursing than my OH, who seems to work on the theory that the less fuss she makes of me, the more incentive I have to make a quick recovery.

If you don't get better soon I'll send her round. You have been warned. :)

She's doing a very good job indeed as it happens, which surprises me because she normally has no sympathy:)

I think she's trying extra hard because she feels guilty. She phoned NHS Direct as a precaution because I was being 'a bit weird'. She didn't expect to be told after answering a few questions that the ambulance had been called immediately. And then once she was told that, she expected the paramedics to do some brief tests, shake their heads and tut a bit about their time having been wasted. She didn't expect for the paramedic do all sorts and stick around to see if I responded to his initial treatment or if I had to go in, and she didn't expect to be told in no uncertain terms that she's to watch me like a hawk and waste no time in calling them out immediately if I show any new symptoms or relapse back to any of the symptoms that had caused alarm in the first place. In short, she thought I was putting it all on, when in fact its the most poorly I've been since last time I nearly popped my cloggs when I was little, so now she's making sure she follows the paramedic's instructions to the letter:)

I saw the doc in person yesterday. Although nobody said as much, the kind of questions that were asked at various stages did suggest people were thinking meningitis.

Truth is, I think I inadvertantly pushed myself to the point of medical emergency. I had the flu (though I didn't know that at the time), and so I felt cold and had a headache. I turned the fire up full whack and wrapped myself in a blanket and effectively put myself into meltdown. It could be said that wife could have noted that it was far too hot in the room, but in fairness to her, she grew up in a house that was, in my opinion, permanently too hot (her mam has the heating on in summer) so to her I guess it was just a bit warm.

I think the lesson here is a simple one, and may apply to everyone I guess. If you're lurgied, and logically you know that your perception of temperature is affected by lurgy, and logically you know that your living room warms very quickly when the fire is on full whack, and logically you know it is probably like a sauna by now but your body says its sub-zero, go with good solid logic. It might just keep you alive.

I once read somewhere that sadly one of the reasons so many old people die in winter is not only because of the cold, but sometimes because their perception of heat deteriorates with age, so in making sure they don't get too cold, they inadvertantly overheat themselves. I guess that's what I nearly did.
