It did cross my mind that maybe I could have Telly Tubby land in that part of my garden or burrow into the mound and make it into a grotto then sell tickets to come and see the Guildford hermit ...

Thanks Kristen, although I'm on chalk it still does get a bit claggy, I managed to slip yesterday after heavily watering my veggie patch and the path got muddy. Yesterday I must have spent a couple of hours just weeding the paths and stopping the grass etc invading the beds, so if the paths were all chalk that's one less job to do in the future.

You're still going great guns :dbgrtmb:

I don't usually look at men's piles (or women's for that matter) but looking at yours has made go weak at the knees! :heehee: :loll: :loll:

Hi John, I've finally read through to the end of your thread - what a saga!!! I am full of admiration and think you have done a wonderful job, especially as you are not trained as a builder, it's just amazing. Congratulations.
That chalk pile is going to take some shifting. Maybe Kent CC could use it to repair any cracks in the white cliffs of Dover :heehee:

I've made some good progress, I've shaped and dug the beds and filled them with soil and know what I want to put in them. Currently they are filled with my old plants in pots that I saved from the original beds to give an idea of how it will look.

I'm glad I didn't rush to plant up because of the frost we had last week.

I'm thinking of planting Fatsia Japonica, Banana (Musa Basjoo) and some Trachycarpus and Cordylines for starters.

Am I right in thinking it's still a little early to be planting these ?

You could probably get that chalk taken away by a lime mortar production company, they could burn it & make a fair bit of dosh out of that John.

I've shifted about a quarter of it now Ziggy, and soon it will be gone, using it to make paths in my veggie plot. Saving me a fortune in gym subscriptions.

My neighbour comes from london and reckons that if they left anything at all outside on the street of any value it would disappear over-night, rubble, bricks and even a pile of chalk would disappear. Not round us though.

          Blimey,

Thats even better than freecycle:dbgrtmb: Put a load of apples out last year, people round here would rather buy them in the supermarket than be seen taking free ones  Still enjoying apple chutney that I made from them

Many years ago we put a barrow load of apples on the front by the footpath with a note saying 'help yourself'. Mrs shiney got quite upset when none were taken so I got lots of paper bags, bagged them up and put up a sign saying '10p per bag'. By the evening they had all gone and the small cardboard box for the money was nearly full! :thumb:

I've finally stopped taking delivery of ballast, sand and cement. These arrived a couple of weeks ago, at long last I've started planting. Watch this space:

Not overly expensive honest! I've got the big plants mostly in position, but still in pots. The big tree fern is on the left, Mrs JWK has already christened him 'totem', not the best of pictures I was really taking photos of my new fence stakes (:saddo smiley:)

and loads of cheap Wickes compost as a soil improver :)
