love the tree fern (brings back memories of my time in New Zealand) and the seating area. it is going to look fantastic when all completed.

what is the plant which is sort of half way along, it is low down with big leaves with a sort of reddish hue to them?

It's Ensete maurelii - the Red Abyssinian banana, I've got a couple more banana plants up in my greenhouse waiting to be planted, Musa basjoo (Japanese banana) and Musa sikkimensis (Himalayan Banana Tree).

Thanks, I'm pleased with the outcome but would never attempt a curved wall/seat again, it took ages cutting all the granite slabs to fit together seamlessly. At one point I was going to render it all but that got vetoed by my OH :dbgrtmb:

That worries me Dave, I've no experience of them, all I can do is pray for milder winters.

I hate rendering. And it would have been 10x worse with it being curved..

I thought you had got a professional to do it for you! (unless you're a professional) :dbgrtmb:

Yes my wife hates rendering too, hence the change of plan :dbgrtmb:

Well I've done a weekend bricklaying course, doesn't make me a professional , I certainly couldn't make a living at it, I'm way too slow.

I've seen Johns work there in person, i'd give him a job:dbgrtmb:

Not an easy thing to do on a curve at all:thumbsup:

Are you going to micro chip the ferns John ?

I meant actually doing the rendering :D but yeah, it CAN look horrible.. I sometimes see houses with it on the front, and as soon as the light hits it, you can tell someone who can't render has done it.. I don't mind pebbledashing, though :yess:

I haven't tried bricklaying, but I reckon I'd be alright with it..

Oh, hadn't thought of that, they are in the back garden behind locked gates so not too easy to pinch - is it expensive to micro chip I wonder?

 Ah I see :heehee: Must admit I've never rendered a curved surface so it might have taken a fair bit of doing to get it right, and like you say the light/shadows would show up any imperfections. Also I've seen quite a few rendered buildings where the blockwork underneath shows through, that looks horrible.

Found a bloke online that will microchip your dog for $10 including registering the chip, so if you put a wooly coat on them & call them Rex...

The ones in our local woods are chipped with GPS, can't hide them anywhere:thumbsup:

Yeah, as it dries out.. but that's probably because they haven't put a scratchcoat underneath it.

If I were doing a curved wall, I'd probably put metal mesh on the wall before I did it to ensure it didn't ever crack..

                Like that..

I did (well, the company I worked for at the time) an 80ft building in Manchester, one of the gable ends, and because it was on scaffolding, whenever I walk past it now I cover my eyes so I don't have to see it.. patching up rendering makes it look so horrible.. this is why I'd always tell people to paint it and not just leave it the colour it dries to.

Funny you should say that Ziggy, I've got a T.Rex in my small greenhouse waiting for the warmer weather:

The one at the front is my T. Rex :D which I am hoping will grow into a monster (just like Bananman's http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/tropical-gardening/476-tetrapanax-rex.html)
