    Hi Lol,

Sounds like a wonderful place to be.

I've got a villa in the Algarve booked for whitsun week and this will be my first visit to Portugal. I'll be keeping an eye out for any interesting agave species and I'm led to believe some have gone native in the region.

If you'd like to PM me with where you will be, perhaps we can all get together for a luncheon. As I said, I'm centrally located.

If you've looked on my Algarvian Daze thread, there are several varieties there, pretty common though I think. Also in my Country Life thread. Most of them are to be found near the coast.

In saying so, when is Whitsun? Is it the end of May holiday?

    Hi lol,

Thanks very much. Sounds like a good idea and I'm sure you know all the best places to eat on the Algarve (I'm keen to try chicken piri piri myself). I'll PM you nearer the date when I've got my flight, car rental etc etc sorted out.

SWMBO has booked the villa so all I know is its about 50 minutes west of Faro. As I'm the one who's going to have to get us there from the airport I really ought to take more interest

Whitsun is the end of May holiday so I'm guessing Easyjet will rip me off as the kids are off of school

I'll check out your thread as I'm sure there will be a lot of interest to me in it.

    Ol¡ Agaveman!

We're about 40 minutes west of Faro so you will be centrally located.

Here is a good map of Algarve. If you "hover" over Silves you will see Calvos ... that is where I am, well Calvos/Carrasqueria but it's close enough. [IMG]

Hover over Albufeira and you will see Guia ... that is where Chicken Piri-Piri originated some 35 or more years ago. It's chicken heaven around here which is good because that's mainly what I eat.

The sooner you book easyJet the cheaper it is. We have friends here at the moment for a month (not with us, they have their own place) and they booked last October and arrived here (half term) at £100 for the two of them return.

Having worked within the airline industry, the sooner you book the cheaper the seats. Our company sent ten staff to an Airline Show in Cannes one year and most of them were on the same plane (I think it was an easyJet) all sitting together-ish and their fares ranged from Ã?£69 to Ã?£200-odd because of when they booked. Pays to look in advance. [IMG]

I think they are "long" 6-8cms as they were reaching for the light from the Geraniums etc covering them.

Sorry, pete, I'm a fickle woman ... you've known me long enough. :D

I'm now not 100% sure.

David ... everything's paranormal with me ... surely you should know that by now. [IMG]

I had a similar instance of young plants jumping into my pockets when I was in Cyprus last year. Oddly enough they were Kalanchoes (Bryophyllums) as well. In my case the species is K. serrata (sometimes known as 'Magic Tower') - to all intents and purposes halfway between your tubiflorum and the more familiar diagremontianum. Its crowning glory is the magnificent 'chandelier' of ruby red flowers that are probably the most intensely hued of any of the Bryophyllum group.

It's a very lovely thing and quite spectacular when it is doing its stuff. Better still, it appears to be quite hardy here and 1 year old plants have come through the winter with apparent ease. The leaves are very narrow - not as tubular as LoL's plant and when exposed to full sun they have quite dramatic markings. I'm hoping my plants will flower this year - if they do I'll post a pic.

That is really a lovely one you have, DaveP, and I notice it's the type that bears babies on the leaves like the Mexican Hat Plant.

    http://toptropicals.com/html/toptropicals/catalog/photo_db/K.htm?NumPerPage=20&NumPerLine=4&listonly=0&first=120

I had a Mexican Hat Plant (K crenato-daigremontiana) in the early 80s but got rid of it because the babies were a nuisance falling all over the place and rooting everywhere. I never did see it flower, probably because it was a houseplant.

My K tomentosa is blooming now but is very insipid in comparison to its relatives.

I really did not know there were so many types of Kalanchoe and I just hope mine (whichever one it may be, probably the K tubiflorum [IMG] ) takes as these chandelier types are very impressive.

Here's this same plant at our "local" which I had not noticed before (probably wasn't in bloom) ...

Now I'll probably see it everywhere. :D
