She uses the litter tray even when there are both other cats, me and my wife in there. It does not seem to bother her. We thought she might like quiet and privacy, but it made no difference.

Sounds to me like she thinks carpet and litter are the same substance (nice and soft) but that kitchen floor is different (nasty and hard).

It'll take patience to teach her which is which. If she was born of a feral cat, then she won't have had any training from her mother and can't be expected to know instinctively which is which.

I think she will improve as she grows. Kittens often have a poor sense of what's proper!!

I wouldn't agree to resort to this type of treatment seems quite cruel to me even if it did work, we have always treated our animals very much like one of the family.

Teaching children to potty train is harder than teaching pets and lots of love, care and patience are required in both cases.

:D Helen don't worry, I'm not a cruel person, have had animals all my life, he was a farm kitten... Lived wild in the barns with the rest... He was very vicious at times to everybody, so didn't feel bad to resorting to dipping his nose in it in the end.... He went on to become the most affectionate cat & lived happily until the ripe old age of 21, when he died of old age.. He is now in the garden under a Cherry tree.... :D

Put any deposits in the tray so it smells of it and spray the soiled areas with febreze or cheap deodorant, anything that will stink. The kitten should then asociate the tray with the right smell and be put off using the other areas.

Failing that try and move her onto the tray each time she trys to go in the wrong place or as a last resort use a squirty bottle and quirt her.

Its nice to know that Marley and it's sweet your dirty kitty turned out fine....you were so very lucky to have him with you so many years it must have been heartbreaking for you when he passed.

What I wanted to say really is that you see so many unloved animals that sometimes it's the people that should be called animals not the poor abused little critters....I have had the pleasure of having quite a few animals in my lifetime but sadly some of my dearest darlings haven't been with us for very long and each time it gets harder to take them to the vets for that one last time. :(

It is funny but rather pleasing in a way, that every piece of advice given we have already tried, bar one. Must admit we have not tried spraying the litter with Catnip, mainly becuae we did not want the others rolling in it!
We have discovered that she prefers it if the litter is clean. This maybe as a result of early training by her mother, to go in a different place each time as our other cats do in the garden.
So far she ha smanaged for a couple of days so I think this topic ought to be closed now. Thanks again though folks.
