I taught my daughters to cook and, truth to tell, they're probably better at it than I am, mainly because over the years I've got complacent, whereas they actually follow a recipe!

I've not come across a teenager who can't/won't use a kettle, although I do remember moving one daughter into Uni and someone in the shared kitchen moaning loud and long because there was no toaster - when someone said we'll just use the grill, the reply was 'What? How? :thud:

I had a friend at school who' mum asked what he wanted for lunch. He said 'Scrambled eggs but the microwaves broken'... his mum duly replied that's ok, we'll do it on the hob. 'YOU CAN DO IT ON THE HOB?!'
[I should add that at this point I was more confused that you could do it in a microwave, or more to the point, why you would lol]

One of the interesting things on another site is the thread in which children are posting about having to teach their parents to cook! Now that is sad.
And it is not that long since I saw a Flat advertised which had no kitchen or indeed anywhere to boil the water in a kettle. When asked about it, the seller said that the kind of people who bought these type of flats did not cook, they ate out or had take-away meals which included a hot drink.
I am told it is fairly common in USA cities for people not to have any cooking facilities.

As a 24 yr old in my very first rented accommodation, I very often burned boiled eggs! Burning toast under the grill was a given but then I was used to doing the toast at the living room fire with our posh new extendible toasting fork!

Elementary physics. Pass an electrical current through the water to split the H2O molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, then you can burn it easily:dbgrtmb:

Fantastic. My grandad always used a toasting fork. In fact it was exactly like the one in your pic, except his was blackened with age. It worked great with the proper bread he used to buy but he gave it to me in the end, and they just don't work well at all with the supersoft fake bread most of us buy these days.

Apropos of nothing, here is a quote from Benjamin Disraeli

"He traces the steam engine all the way back to the tea kettle."
