I actually have liked a couple of his garden designs (not the lollipops) - I rather liked the concrete bunker thingy with their planting, surrounded by the lavender and windy paths. Not a garden I would like to have, but one I would have thoroughly enjoyed walking round it.

I too have been impressed by some of his work, & also by the budgets he gets to work with in quite ordinary suburban gardens.

You see these balls on sticks in Germany, quite a lot. I am not sure what they mean but they only use a few scattered around. You also see other shapes too. I will try to find out the significance of them when I go there this year.

Whatever you say about Diarmuid his designs are memorable unlike some of the Chelsea gardens I've seen. I think he brought a splash of colour and life to Chelsea unlike some of the pretentious designers who have humungous budgets and can't fail to impress. Diarmuid is real and refreshing.
I'm sure if I had hundreds of thousands to spend I could come up with a stunning garden.

The diversification of top show gardens will always be a bone of contention.
Here are a couple of examples. The top garden I believe cost in the region of £250,000.Is this obscene? Or are we lucky to be able to see both both ends of the spectrum.

Hard to answer that, Roders. IMO, it's good to have these showcase events, which give everyone ideas, and everyone who's interested will pick up things they like or dislike from all sorts of different types of garden. So, again, IMO, it's worth the gardens there costing a lot, as it's a resource for us all.

I would agree - I love looking at other gardens, expensive or not - and happy to pinch ideas from both. The show gardens are lovely - and everyone can pick something up from them whether it be plants, planting combinations or landscaping.
