Roadworks, delays and congestion - when there is absolutely no bleedin' need for it!

I have had the day from hell today, mainly due to a road being closed in one direction due to a leaking gas main - fair enough, you might think, but let me explain.......

This one way closure was put in overnight, putting a bus route onto a diversion, and had traffic management in two main roads. The diversion routing took us around the houses a bit, and then back onto the second of the main roads (dual carriageway) which had one of its two lanes coned off. The resulting queue on this dual carriageway tailed back approximately 4 to 5 miles, and made turning out from a side road on the diversion onto this main road nigh on impossible due to the standing queue of traffic. Delays were approximately two hours.

A colleague of mine went to investigate further, and found that the closure that was in place on the first road (the one we normally use) was only in place to allow the contractors somewhere to park their van! Worse still, they hadn't been able to find the leak, and had filled the hole on the other road back in, and were only needing a couple of bucket loads of tar to finish the job off - but they had no idea when the tar would turn up, and were intent on just sitting there waiting for it to arrive, whilst creating mayhem in their wake.

Suffice to say, my colleague 'persuaded' them to move their van and park it elsewhere, off the road, and then he threw all the cones and signs onto the pavement so some level of normality could be restored.

Two hour delays, and for what? A bleedin' parking space!:wallbanging:

School run Mums ( apologies to those who have some common sense)

Delivery of 1 and a 1/2 ton of roofing slates, delivery address is street next to a school, one of those roads that is off a main road via a little drive way along the main road. School has spent £X,000's on a parent pick up point, inside school grounds.

Do they use this brand new facility.... NO.

They are creatures of habit and use these little streets with no turning points, to sit and wait for their children.

I turn up, and get told in no uncertain terms that 'Its a stupid time to make a delivery', even though this parent was blocking the customers drive, and refused to move when he came out and asked nicely. And I quote ' I have parked here for the last 3 years, and there has never been a delivery here at this time, and I never see anyone at home here at this time and you haven't got a car to get out'

            They live among us!

@Gdnam I have the same issue every school day with [insert your choice] parents dropping their kids off to the local school by parking across my driveway. Most that I've had words with move and don't come back (until the following term) but are immediately replaced with another one! There are signs, there are notices to parents and they're all ignored. The occasional traffic warden that comes by special request (which is a whole other complaint) walks up and down a bit and mostly the parents scatter but the ones that don't get nothing in the way of even a polite telling off!
Some days it's so annoying I'm considering breaking windows and all sorts but as they'll know who did it it will just result in me in the dock.

Do they just block your drive or are they actually on your property Andy?

Ahh, pity. Could have made some money with lockable removable parking bollards.

Reminded me of a story my friend used to tell, he was laying tarmac, road was closed, but this woman pulled up in a mini & said she was just popping in a friends house and she'd only be a minute.

They waited and waited but she didn't come back, so they all got on the mini, picked it up and hoiked it over a low garden wall into the garden.

Then carried on tarmacing the road :snork:

@Loofa, to make matters worse it happened at 10 to 3 !, kicking out time is 3.30 as it is an Acadamey/College (11-16's, as we only have 2 tiers now).

The whole reason I was there at this time was to AVOID the school run, as I knew the area well, unloading 60 roof slates took less than 5 minutes. It did make the customer and I laugh tho' as almost every time I had to shimmy between her and the car in front, I made it look as though I was going to drop them on her shiny car, her face was a picture !

@Zigs, now if I had a grab on the van that is what I would have told her was going to do unless she moved.

I have no qualms at all, of the cars that people choose to drive, but lets just say there must be some pretty tough terrain around the area I was in, what irks me most, is that most will live within a 20 minute walk home from school (or 5 minutes by car, ONCE you get out of the queues) it is so much healthier and would do both parent and child(ren) the world of good.

It must cost a fortune, to start the car from cold, drive a mile or two, stop for 30+ minutes, start the car from cold again (didn't really have time to get to temperature for maximum efficiency ) drive a mile or two. Bet I could do a trip to London and back, using less fuel than they do on the school run !
