          Latest moan !!!

My mum went into the bank to get change for a £20.00 note she wanted 4 x £5.00 as she finds them more easily to handle when she goes shopping.....
It turned out to be a forgery so she left the bank with a note ? and a serial number on plus no money in her purse for nothing !!! , she had got the £20.00 from the post office so off she went , anyway she explained what had happened and got spoken to like she was worthless herself and basically told she coudnt prove she got it from the post office , she left feeling really bad as if she had done something wrong and upset as there was a queue at the back of her and everyone listening to the conversation , I have just come off the phone to a very upset mother that will worry about this all night.

Sorry to hear that Spruce, I thought the Post Office had to check high denomination notes before they passed them.

So in essence, the post office are laundering money? I'd be having a word with plod. well I probably wouldn't, but I'd be telling the post office staff that I was going to unless they got it sorted immediately. The post office will have CCTV proving your mother was there when she said. As will the bank, and nowadays there is probably CCTV footage of everything in between.

You could say its only £20 and write it off, but I can imagine that would have been quite upsetting and extremely embarrassing, so I'd kick up a stink about it.

I'd advise her to report it to the Police, Spruce, let them do the paper trail! If she doesn't report it, who knows who else will be left like her: embarassed, belittled, upset and ... out of pocket!

Maybe she can't prove that she got it from the PO, but that won't stop the Police from checking them out. Also, you only know about the incident with your Mum, maybe other people have also found dodgy 20's and reported it the Police; this will add to any potential investigation the Police may already be carrying out.

Give her a :grphg: from me xMx

Sorry to hear about that Spruce.

I used to work in a bank, its impossible to check every note that's being paid in. It used to be down to the cashier spotting dodgy notes by eye, not easy when you are counting bundles of thousands of pounds.

Sadly, I don't think the police will be in the least bit interested - they don't seem to have any interest in stuff like this any more, and seem to be more interested in wasting vast amounts of money on cases where someone did or did not call someone else a 'pleb'

Of course they would be "interested".

Admittedly it won't be a case of a raid of the PO or anything remotely dramatic. But, it does add to their 'intelligence'.

Also, bear in mind, if she doesn't hand it in (or dispose of it somehow), she will be in possession of illegal currency ;)

No danger of that, as the bank confiscated it.

the bank took it off her !!! and gave her a receipt, and was told by the cashier SHE was breaking the law, she feels dreadful I have spoken to her this morning and my brother is popping in to see her, she is in her 80's and only recently come out of hospital and doesnt need the stress and the worry.

What gets me is the knock on effect of a £20.00 note can have on someone who is the innocent party in all of this.
She is sending a letter to "Customer Care" Main PO

                          I appreciate the posts
