Fingers splitting. Yes, my hands are so dry, the skin is splitting. I use lotions and good ones too but I wash my hands so many times a day that in this cold weather the skin starts splitting. I don't mind the little bit of pain but I do get angry with having difficulty manipulating small items.

There are a number of different protection products for the hands that are supposed to act like a protective skin. You can find them quite easily if you google something such as 'protection for hairdressers' hands'. There are arguments on both sides on how effective they are but they're definitely better than nothing. I used to provide some for my staff (can't remember the make).

What is just as important is to dry your hands properly each time you have had them in water. The correct way to do so is to dab them dry with a soft cotton towel. Rubbing them dry is not good for your skin. Also a good moisturising cream is needed. A lot of the cosmetic moisturisers are not as good as some of the basic ones. What you need is an emollient. E45 cream is an emollient but I think that Diprobase is better and is used a lot by the medical profession. I use it.

Pure Beeswax hand cream is quite good for dry, flaky, irritated or splitting skin. It does not contain water or any petroleum and its quite concentrated so you only need a tiny amount.
